Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 31/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters
between Torres Strait and Bowen.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1034 hPa] over eastern Victoria is expected to weaken as it moves
eastwards over the Tasman Sea during the next couple of days. An upper trough
near the western border of Queensland is expected to move slowly eastwards.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy and cool with scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms
over the tropics and the west of the state, with some moderate to locally heavy
falls possible about western districts. Scattered showers and patchy rain about
central districts. Scattered showers about the remaining east coast and nearby
inland areas, with isolated showers or light rain over the southeast and
southern interior. Fresh and gusty SE winds along the east coast, tending
moderate to fresh and gusty SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
Cloudy with scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the
tropics, western and central districts. Moderate to heavy falls possible over
the Channel Country, Warrego and Central West districts south and west of about
Longreach. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northwest and
northern Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers about southeast districts, more
frequent about the coast. A cool to cold day in most areas. Moderate to fresh
and gusty E to SE winds along the east coast, tending SE to NE elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The high is expected to be located near New Zealand and continue to weaken,
easing the winds along the east coast. The upper level trough is likely to
remain over Queensland's southwest, producing scattered showers, isolated storms
and areas of rain over the southern districts, and some moderate to locally
heavy falls about the Channel Country, Warrego and Maranoa and Central West
district south of about Longreach. Increasing showers and rain areas are
expected to spread over southeast districts. Scattered showers and mainly
isolated thunderstorms across the southern tropics and the Peninsula district.
Isolated showers over the far west of the state. Maximum temperatures remaining
below average across most of the state, particularly over the interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough is expected to drift gradually eastwards across the southern
interior, accompanied by a surface low pressure area over the northern interior
of New South Wales. The eastward movement of the upper trough should allow the
thundery rain areas to gradually contract south and east into the southeast
quarter of the state with moderate falls at least. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms are expected over most of the tropics with lingering
instability. Isolated showers over the Channel Country due to instability from
the upper trough. Fine over the northwest. Maximum temperatures remaining below
average across most of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough and is expected to move towards southeast Queensland, while
the surface low over New South Wales is expected to move into the Tasman Sea
overnight and deepen. A surface trough will also move eastwards across southern
Queensland, and contract the thundery rain areas and moderate falls east off the
coast in the afternoon. Cold gusty W to SW winds will follow the trough over the
interior of the state with cloud conditions and afternoon showers expected over
the southern interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the eastern
tropics, mostly clearing by evening.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The deep low off the central New South Wales coast is likely to move slowly
east across the Tasman Sea from mid week, while a high over the Southern Ocean
is likely to extend a ridge across most of Queensland. The combination of these
two systems is likely to drive cold and gusty S to SW winds across most of the
state, easing on Thursday. Cloudy conditions are likely to persist over the
southern and southeast interior with some light showers or drizzle. Morning
frost areas over the southern and central interior. Isolated showers persisting
about the northeast tropical coast in an onshore airstream.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
