Weather Situation
A high [1037 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight is moving slowly
eastwards and will enter the Tasman Sea on Thursday. An upper trough lies over
southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated showers along the east coast, extending to the adjacent inland
during the afternoon. Showers tending more scattered along the Fraser and Wide
Bay coasts. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will affect the far north of Cape
York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue
across the remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh SE winds across the state,
strong at times about the east coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
Showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected through the northwest of the
state, tending to thundery rain in the evening. Cloud will increase through
remaining parts of western Queensland with isolated afternoon showers expected.
Isolated to scattered showers along the east coast, increasing to possible rain
areas about the tropical coast. Again isolated afternoon showers over the
adjacent eastern interior. Isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and
Torres Strait. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over much of the state, tending
fresh along the east coast.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move eastwards into the Tasman Sea. Strong SE'ly winds north of
Sandy Cape, contracting north of Cardwell during the afternoon. Moderate to
fresh SE winds elsewhere on the east coast. The upper trough will move closer to
the western Queensland border and as a result cool and cloudy conditions with
rain will spread throughout much of western and northern Queensland. Scattered
showers along the east coast, tending isolated about the southeast interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high will continue to move eastwards across the Tasman Sea while
weakening. However, a weak low level trough will move into the northwest Coral
Sea and should maintain strong winds along the east coast north of Cairns. The
upper trough will move slightly eastwards, moving the main area of rain into
the southern and southwest interior. Showers and isolated thunderstorms should
continue throughout the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will continue to weaken near New Zealand, easing winds along the
east coast. The upper trough will be located over southwest Queensland, bringing
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms to much of central, southern and
southeastern Queensland. Isolated showers over far western districts. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms in the tropics.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Some uncertainty remains about the movement of the upper trough during the
outlook period but it is expected to move slowly across southern Queensland.
Rain areas and possible thunderstorms are expected over much of southern and
eastern Queensland on Sunday and Monday, with isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms in the north and west. Rain areas and thunderstorms should
generally contract to the south and southeast of the state into the middle of
the week, though some uncertainty remains.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
