MELBOURNE - May 29/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coast waters between Torres Strait and Point Danger including Hervey Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1037 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight is moving slowly eastwards and will enter the Tasman Sea on Thursday. An upper trough lies over southern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers along the east coast, extending to the adjacent inland during the afternoon. Showers tending more scattered along the Fraser and Wide Bay coasts. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will affect the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue across the remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh SE winds across the state, strong at times about the east coast. Forecast for Wednesday Showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected through the northwest of the state, tending to thundery rain in the evening. Cloud will increase through remaining parts of western Queensland with isolated afternoon showers expected. Isolated to scattered showers along the east coast, increasing to possible rain areas about the tropical coast. Again isolated afternoon showers over the adjacent eastern interior. Isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over much of the state, tending fresh along the east coast. Forecast for Thursday The high will move eastwards into the Tasman Sea. Strong SE'ly winds north of Sandy Cape, contracting north of Cardwell during the afternoon. Moderate to fresh SE winds elsewhere on the east coast. The upper trough will move closer to the western Queensland border and as a result cool and cloudy conditions with rain will spread throughout much of western and northern Queensland. Scattered showers along the east coast, tending isolated about the southeast interior. Forecast for Friday The high will continue to move eastwards across the Tasman Sea while weakening. However, a weak low level trough will move into the northwest Coral Sea and should maintain strong winds along the east coast north of Cairns. The upper trough will move slightly eastwards, moving the main area of rain into the southern and southwest interior. Showers and isolated thunderstorms should continue throughout the remainder of the state. Forecast for Saturday The high will continue to weaken near New Zealand, easing winds along the east coast. The upper trough will be located over southwest Queensland, bringing rain areas and isolated thunderstorms to much of central, southern and southeastern Queensland. Isolated showers over far western districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the tropics. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Some uncertainty remains about the movement of the upper trough during the outlook period but it is expected to move slowly across southern Queensland. Rain areas and possible thunderstorms are expected over much of southern and eastern Queensland on Sunday and Monday, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms in the north and west. Rain areas and thunderstorms should generally contract to the south and southeast of the state into the middle of the week, though some uncertainty remains.
