MELBOURNE - May 28/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters for Tuesday morning. A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coast waters between Torres Strait and Point Danger including Hervey bay and moreton Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1034 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight is moving slowly eastwards and will enter the Tasman Sea on thursday. An upper level trough over the southern inland border area of Queensland will amplify and move to the west. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers about the exposed coast south from Fraser Island. Isolated showers developing about the Central coast and islands. Cloudy with patchy light rain over the far northern tropics. Isolated showers about the east coast north of Cardwell and through Torres Strait. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds strong at times along most of the east coast. Forecast for Tuesday The large high will move towards Victoria and will maintain the onshore flow along the east coast. Isolated showers will occur in most east coast districts and will spill over into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. Showers will likely be more scattered along the southern coast and Fraser Island due to instability associated with the upper trough extending through southern Queensland. Showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms will affect the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue across the remainder of the state. Possible frost over the south-east inland. Forecast for Wednesday The high will move further eastwards across south-eastern Australia and will continue to direct fresh to strong SE winds along most of the east coast. The upper trough will move west into central Australia and intensify, increasing instability through western Queensland. Showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected through the northwest of the state increasing to thundery rain at night as the upper feature approaches. Cloud will increase through remaining parts of western Queensland with isolated afternoon showers expected. Isolated to scattered showers will occur along the east coast in the onshore wind flow increasing to possible rain areas through the southern tropical coast. Again isolated afternoon showers will occur over the adjacent eastern interior while isolated storms will occur through Torres Strait. Forecast for Thursday The high will move eastwards into the Tasman Sea. Strong SE'ly winds will continue north of Cairns while elsewhere along the east coast winds will ease to moderate to fresh. The upper trough will move closer to the western Queensland border and as a result cool and cloudy conditions with rain will spread throughout much of western and northern Queensland. Scattered showers will continue along the east coast with isolated showers extending into the southeast interior. Forecast for Friday The high will continue to move eastwards across the tasman Sea and lose intensity. However, a weak low level trough will move into the north-west Coral Sea. So strong winds will continue along the east coast north of Cairns during the morning then ease thereafter. The upper trough will move only a little further eastwards and as a result the main area of rain will move into the southern interior and the south-east. Elsewhere across the state showers will occur while isolated storms may occur over the north-west near the surface trough. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The upper trough over the west of the state will retrogress and amplify over the weekend. As a result a trough will develop near or off the southern Queensland coast during Saturday with a low developing in the trough off the northern New south wales coast on Sunday. A new high will also move into the Great Australian Bight area. So further areas of showers and rain will occur over southern and central Queensland during Saturday and Sunday before clearing during Monday. Then dry SW to S winds will circulate across most of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
