Weather Situation
A high [1034 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight is moving slowly eastwards
and extends a firm ridge across most of Queensland. An upper level trough will
move north into southern Queensland today.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers developing along the southern coast and southern border
ranges, scattered along the exposed coast and about Fraser Island. Isolated
showers also developing over the Central coast and islands during the day.
Patchy rain and isolated showers over the northeastern Peninsula district, with
possible thunderstorms through Torres Strait. Remaining cloudy over remaining
northern tropics though with only patchy light rain expected. Fine and mostly
sunny elsewhere. A cool to cold morning through the central and southeastern
interior with widespread early frosts. Fresh to strong S to SE winds along the
east coast and through the southeastern Gulf. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The large high will move towards Victoria and will maintain the onshore flow
along the east coast. Isolated showers will occur in most east coast districts
and will extend into areas inland of the north tropical and southeast coasts in
the afternoon. Showers will likely be more scattered along the southern coast
and Fraser Island due to instability associated with the upper trough extending
through southern Queensland. Showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms will
affect the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions will continue across the remainder of the state. Increasing
moisture will result in a smaller early frost area through the southeast inland
and Maranoa.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move further east across southeastern Australia and will direct
fresh to strong SE winds along most of the east coast. The upper trough will
move west into central Australia and intensify, increasing instability through
western Queensland. Showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected through the
northwest near a developing surface trough, increasing to thundery rain at night
as the upper feature approaches. Cloud will increase through remaining parts of
western Queensland with isolated afternoon showers expected. Isolated to
scattered showers will occur along the east coast in the onshore wind flow,
increasing to rain areas through the southern tropical coast and also over the
northeastern Peninsula and Torres Strait where thunderstorms remain likely.
Isolated showers will again develop through the central and southeastern
interior in the afternoon in the moist E to NE wind flow.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move east into the Tasman Sea. Strong SE'ly winds will continue
north of Cairns though should start to decrease further south. The upper trough
will most likely move east closer to the western Queensland border. Cool and
cloudy conditions will therefore extend throughout much of western and northern
Queensland and also affect northern parts of central districts with rain areas
and isolated thunderstorms expected. Scattered showers will occur along the
remaining east coast, with isolated showers extending into the southeastern and
southern central interior.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will continue to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea through
the outlook period. There is some uncertainty about the movement of the upper
trough but it is also expected to continue to affect much of the state through
the outlook period. Cloud, showers and rain areas are likely to affect most
parts of the state during the outlook period but should gradually contract to
the south and southeast of the state over the weekend.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
