MELBOURNE - May 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for eastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coast waters between Lockhart River and St Lawrence. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams on the North Tropical Coast. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high over the western Great Australian Bight is moving slowly eastwards and extended a ridge across southern and central Queensland. A deep low was located over the south-west Tasman Sea. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Cloudy with patchy rain over the north-east tropics contracting northwards. Dry and cool to cold over the remainder of the state with widespread early frosts through the central and southern interior. Some cloud developing over southern inland border parts in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds over the state, strong and gusty about the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria and over the north-east tropical coast. Forecast for Sunday The high will move slowly eastwards across the Great Australian Bight. The high will continue to circulate dry and cool SW to SE winds across most of the state. Some cloud will persist about southern inland border areas with possible drizzle. Cloud with, at best, patchy light rain will continue about the far north-east tropics. Fine and cool conditions will continue over the remainder of the state with widespread early frosts over the southern, southeast and central interior. Strong S to SE winds will persist over south-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters and about the north-east tropics. Forecast for Monday The large high will move further eastwards across the Great Australian Bight. As a result, winds along the east coast will begin to shift more onshore and moisten. So isolated showers will develop along the east coast in the favoured areas. As well, due to the pressure gradient tightening along the far southern coast, strong winds will develop on this section of coast during the afternoon. Cloudy conditions with little or no rain will continue in the far north though this cloud will continue to decay. Strong winds will continue over south-east Gulf of carpentaria waters and along the north-east tropical coast. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere with another cold morning and widespread early frosts through the central, southern and southeastern interior. Forecast for Tuesday The large high will almost reach Victoria and will tighten the pressure gradient along the east coast. Consequently, strong winds will develop along the entire east coast. Stream showers will occur in most east coast districts and will spill over into the adjacent south-east inland in the afternoon. Fine and generally cool conditions will continue across the remainder of the state. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The high will continue to move slowly eastwards while an upper trough will amplify over central Australia. So strong winds will continue along most of the east coast into about Thursday before easing. Showers will continue along the east coast and will spill over into the adjacent inland. With the amplification of the upper trough middle cloud with rain areas will develop over northern areas of the state during Wednesday and then spread into remaining inland areas of the state on Thursday. This activity will then begin to spread to the east during Friday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
