MELBOURNE - May 24/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Gulf of Carpentaria waters. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for east coast waters between Cape Sidmouth and St Lawrence. A severe weather warning has been issued for North Tropical Coast and Tablelands for heavy rain. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure cell near Perth extends a ridge across into western Queensland. A trough is approaching the east coast of Queensland from the interior and will progress north with freshening SSW winds. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas over northern and eastern half of the state will contract further northeast during the day. Some moderate to heavy falls about eastern coastal districts with possible thunder in the southeast. Showers generally further north over Cape York Peninsula with a few thunderstorms. Becoming dry and cooler over western and southern districts with freshening S'ly winds. Moderate NE to SE winds about the east coast shifting S to SW during the day and freshening. Strong S to SE winds over Gulf waters and developing over southern tropical waters on the east coast this afternoon. Forecast for Saturday Patchy light rain over the tropics and the central coast. Dry and cool over the interior. Chilly over southern districts in the morning with extensive early frost over the southeast and southern interior. Strong SSE winds continuing over Gulf and northeast coastal waters. Forecast for Sunday Patchy light rain continuing over the tropics otherwise generally dry and cool over the remainder of the state. Some cloud over the southwest of the state with possible early drizzle. Chilly again over southern districts in the morning with extensive early frost over the southeast, southern and central interior. Strong SE winds persisting across the tropics. Forecast for Monday The next southern high will move slowly over South Australia and winds will gradually shift SE'ly about the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers will start to form near the southeast coast. Remaining dry over the remainder of the state with reduced early frost over the southeast and southern interior. A little light rain persisting over the tropics. Strong winds no confined to the northeast tropical coast. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday As the high moves east winds will continue to shift more SE'ly about the east coast of Queensland with increasing showers and freshening SE winds. Strong winds will develop about most of the east coast. Early frost now decreasing to the southeast interior. By Wednesday and Thursday isolated showers will start to develop inland over eastern districts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
