MELBOURNE - May 24/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time

Carpentaria waters for this evening and spreading to southern offshore waters of
the north-east Gulf of Carpentaria on Friday.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for east coast waters between Cape
Sidmouth and St Lawrence for Friday afternoon and evening.

web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A trough, linked to a low pressure system over Victoria, was located over
the interior of the state and will move off the east coast of Queensland during
Friday afternoon. A large high near New Zealand directed moist SE to NE winds
into districts east of the trough. A large high was moving eastwards across the
Great Australian Bight and directed dry cool SW to SE winds across the state in
the wake of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy with areas of rain across most of the interior except the far
south-west where clearing conditions. Some moderate to locally heavy falls with
possible thunder likely with the cloud band mainly in the south. Showers will
occur over remaining eastern districts while isolated storms will develop over
Cape York Peninsula. Colder S to SW winds will continue to spread eastwards
across western and central areas of the state. Mostly moderate E to NE winds
over the eastern districts tending fresh at times about the coast.
Forecast for Friday
The cloud and rain band will continue to contract eastwards with the
associated clearance line extending from the Gulf Country to the Southeast
Coast by the evening. Further moderate to heavy falls with local thunder will
occur in the cloud band mainly about the Central Coast and Capricornia and the
adjacent inland. The surface trough will pass off the east coast of Queensland
during the afternoon and this will allow cool to cold SW to SE winds to
circulate across nearly all of the state. These winds will continue strong
across the south-east Gulf of Carpentaria and become strong off the east coast
between Cape Sidmouth and St Lawrence.
Forecast for Saturday
The cloud and rain band will contract into the north-east tropics. The rain
will only be light and will decrease further during the day. Elsewhere over the
state, conditions will be fine apart from some morning frost and possible fog
areas about the south-east and southern inland. Winds will be mostly moderate SW
to SE and will be strong about the south-east Gulf of Carpentaria and along the
east coast between about Lockhart River and Cardwell.
Forecast for Sunday
The large high over the eastern Great Australia Bight will dominate the
weather across the state. The high will continue to circulate dry and cool to
cold S to SE winds across most of the state. These winds will keep conditions
fine and clear in most areas. Widespread frosts will occur across a large part
of the eastern and central interior of the state. The only weather in the state
will be isolated showers over far northern Cape York Peninsula and through
Torres Strait. Strong winds will continue over the south-east Gulf of
Carpentaria and along the east coast north of Cardwell.
Forecast for Monday
The large high over the eastern Great Australia Bight will continue to
dominate the weather across the state. The high will continue to circulate dry
and cool S to SE winds across most of the state. These winds will keep
conditions fine and clear in most areas. Widespread frosts will occur across a
large part of the eastern and central interior of the state and may extend onto
the southern parts of the Atherton Tablelands. The only weather in the state
will be isolated showers over far northern Cape York Peninsula and through
Torres Strait and about the exposed islands south from Fraser Island. Strong
winds will continue over the south-east Gulf of Carpentaria and along the east
coast north of Cardwell.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high will remain near stationary over the far eastern Great Australian
Bight and will continue to circulate S to SE winds across the state. These winds
will direct isolated showers into most east coast districts from Tuesday onwards
and these showers will spill over into the adjacent inland from Wednesday
afternoon onwards as the flow sifts further to the east. A new upper trough will
develop over western and central Australia during this period and will push some
cloud and rain into the north-west and west of the state from about late
Wednesday onwards. The last of the morning frosts in this series over the
south-east inland will occur on Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
