MELBOURNE - May 24/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A low pressure system is developing rapidly over northwestern Victoria as an upper level trough approaches the west. The low will move southeastwards to be just south of Melbourne by Friday morning and just east of Tasmania by Friday night. The low will intensify further as it tracks away across the south Tasman Sea on Saturday. The next high pressure system will move over Bight waters on Sunday and extend a ridge through inland Victoria on Monday. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayRain across the northeast and southwest, extending to most of the State this evening but only patchy in the southeast and northwest. Isolated thunderstorms in the west and heavy falls developing about the western ranges tonight. Moderate southeast to southerly winds in the south and west, freshening in the west. Light to moderate northeast winds elsewhere.Friday 25 MayRain areas contracting slowly eastwards during the day with locally heavy falls in the west and southwest, extending to central areas and west Gippsland by the evening. Rain only patchy over the far northwest and across east Gippsland. Snowfalls developing on the mountains above 1100 metres. Cool in the east with moderate to fresh north to northeast winds. Colder in the west with southeast to southwesterly winds strengthening, possible reaching gale force about the central and west Gippsland coasts.Saturday 26 MayRain areas over eastern districts, easing to showers during the day. Scattered showers persisting on and south of the ranges and isolated showers mostly clearing over the northern inland. Snowfalls contracting from 1100 metres to above 1500 metres on the ranges. Cool with fresh to strong and squally west to southwest winds, reaching gale force at first along the Gippsland coast.Sunday 27 MayIsolated showers on and south of the ranges, more scattered about the coast. Patchy morning drizzle clearing from the northwest. Showers falling a snow on the ranges above 1600 metres. Cool to mild with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strong at times about the Gippsland coast.Monday 28 MayCold at first with widespread morning fog and frost over inland areas, then a mild and mostly sunny afternoon. Cool and partly cloudy in the south with isolated showers, mainly about the coast.
