MELBOURNE - May 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time The Severe Weather Warning for the Central West and Maranoa and Warrego districts has been CANCELLED. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters for Thursday evening, spreading to offshore waters of the northeast Gulf from Friday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A stationary high near New Zealand extends a ridge along Queensland's east coast. Another high over the Great Australian Bight is expected to push a surface trough eastwards across Queensland's interior, and a colder southerly change across the western districts. An upper level trough over Central Australia is extending a cloud band across much of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Areas of rain across most of the interior, extending east and reaching the eastern interior late in the day. Rain areas clearing the southwest of the state in the afternoon. Some moderate to heavy falls are possible over the southern and central interior with possible local thunder. Showers are expected over the eastern districts, with more widespread showers tending to areas of rain about the North Tropical Coast. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms across Cape York Peninsula. Colder S to SW winds developing across the western districts during the day. Mainly moderate E to NE winds over the eastern districts, fresh at times about the coast. Forecast for Friday The rain band is expected to contract out of the western districts, and move eastwards across the central and eastern districts during the day. Isolated thunderstorms and moderate to heavy falls are possible about the central and southern interior, as well as the Central and Capricornia coasts. Fine, though with cool to cold southerly winds across the western districts, strong at times in the northwest. Cooler southwesterly winds also spreading into the eastern districts during the day. Fresh to strong southerly winds developing about the northern tropics late in the day. Forecast for Saturday The rain band is expected to clear off the southeast and central coast early in the morning, though some showers and areas of patchy rain are expected to linger over the northern tropics. Fine and sunny over the remainder of the state with gusty and cold southerly winds. Areas of morning frost about the central and southern interior. Fresh to strong S to SE winds continuing over Gulf waters and about the north tropical coast. Forecast for Sunday A high in the Great Australia Bight will keep pushing dry and cold southerly winds across most of the state, though the skies will be mostly sunny. Widespread areas of frost through the central, southern and southeast interior. Just some isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula district in an onshore flow. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high is expected to remain over the Great Australian Bight and maintain fine and generally clear, but cool to cold conditions across most of Queensland during the outlook period. Widespread areas of morning frost are expected across the southern and central interior, including the inland parts of the southeast districts. The high should move slowly across Victoria by mid week, pushing onshore winds and isolated showers across Queensland's east coast from Monday. The areas of morning frost should contract inland and become less significant from Tuesday as moisture gradually spreads further inland.
