Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
The Severe Weather Warning for the Central West and Maranoa
and Warrego districts has been CANCELLED.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters
for Thursday evening, spreading to offshore waters of the northeast Gulf from
Friday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A stationary high near New Zealand extends a ridge along Queensland's east
coast. Another high over the Great Australian Bight is expected to push a
surface trough eastwards across Queensland's interior, and a colder southerly
change across the western districts. An upper level trough over Central
Australia is extending a cloud band across much of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Areas of rain across most of the interior, extending east and reaching the
eastern interior late in the day. Rain areas clearing the southwest of the state
in the afternoon. Some moderate to heavy falls are possible over the southern
and central interior with possible local thunder. Showers are expected over the
eastern districts, with more widespread showers tending to areas of rain about
the North Tropical Coast. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms across Cape
York Peninsula. Colder S to SW winds developing across the western districts
during the day. Mainly moderate E to NE winds over the eastern districts, fresh
at times about the coast.
Forecast for Friday
The rain band is expected to contract out of the western districts, and move
eastwards across the central and eastern districts during the day. Isolated
thunderstorms and moderate to heavy falls are possible about the central and
southern interior, as well as the Central and Capricornia coasts. Fine, though
with cool to cold southerly winds across the western districts, strong at times
in the northwest. Cooler southwesterly winds also spreading into the eastern
districts during the day. Fresh to strong southerly winds developing about the
northern tropics late in the day.
Forecast for Saturday
The rain band is expected to clear off the southeast and central coast early
in the morning, though some showers and areas of patchy rain are expected to
linger over the northern tropics. Fine and sunny over the remainder of the state
with gusty and cold southerly winds. Areas of morning frost about the central
and southern interior. Fresh to strong S to SE winds continuing over Gulf waters
and about the north tropical coast.
Forecast for Sunday
A high in the Great Australia Bight will keep pushing dry and cold southerly
winds across most of the state, though the skies will be mostly sunny.
Widespread areas of frost through the central, southern and southeast interior.
Just some isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula district in an
onshore flow.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high is expected to remain over the Great Australian Bight and maintain
fine and generally clear, but cool to cold conditions across most of Queensland
during the outlook period. Widespread areas of morning frost are expected
across the southern and central interior, including the inland parts of the
southeast districts. The high should move slowly across Victoria by mid week,
pushing onshore winds and isolated showers across Queensland's east coast from
Monday. The areas of morning frost should contract inland and become less
significant from Tuesday as moisture gradually spreads further inland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
