Australia -- New South Wales Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of New South Wales was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge to northeast NSW. A cold front is expected to cross NSW slowly Thursday and Friday with a rain-band developing over central and eastern parts of the state Thursday then contracting east with the front. Colder, fresh to strong and gusty west to southwest winds will follow the front, particularly affecting eastern parts of the state Friday night and Saturday as a low pressure system passes to the south. The low is expected to move rapidly to the southeast, over the Southern Tasman Sea on Sunday, and a high pressure system south of the Bight is likely to extend a ridge over much of NSW Sunday and for the early part of the new week.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayPossible isolated showers for the far north coast, otherwise mostly clear. Light to moderate northeast to northwest winds, locally fresh in the south and strong to gale force about the alpine peaks.Thursday 24 MayRain areas developing over the central north during the morning, gradually extending to the southeast during the day. Moderate falls for the central north and possible thunder. Isolated showers in the west, tending scattered over the southwest later with possible thunder. Patchy rain or isolated showers developing about parts of the northeast. Moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds turning westerly in the west.Friday 25 MayRain areas in the east, gradually contracting further to the northeast during the day. Moderate falls and possible thunder about the western slopes of the northern ranges. Scattered showers over the southwest extending eastward across the southern inland with possible thunder. Fine in the northwest. Snow on the Alps, lowering to about the 1000 metre level in the evening. North to northwest winds, before a gusty westerly change crosses much of the state.Saturday 26 MayIsolated showers over the southern inland, tending scattered near the western slopes of the ranges. Snow on the southern ranges to about 1000 metres, retreating to higher levels during the day. Possible isolated showers about the south coast, over the central inland and about the far north coast. Fine for the remainder. Cool to cold, fresh and gusty westerly winds, strong in the east and locally gale force in the southeast but easing later.Sunday 27 MayIsolated showers about the southern ranges and western slopes. Possible isolated showers about remaining southern and central districts. Southwest to southerly winds.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDN10031
