MELBOURNE - May 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown for this morning. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure ridge lies across southern Australia. An upper level trough over Central Australia is expected to move across southern Queensland from Thursday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Mainly isolated showers across the state, more widespread and tending to rain at times about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated storms across Cape York Peninsula and in parts of the central and southern interior. Fine though partly cloudy over the far southwest. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds about the east coast, strong at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Thursday As the upper level trough enters western Queensland rain areas will develop over most of the interior, extending east and reaching the eastern interior late in the day. Rain areas clearing the southwest of the state in the afternoon. Some moderate to heavy falls over the southern and central interior with possible local thunder. Showers are expected over the eastern districts, with more widespread showers tending to areas of rain about the North Tropical Coast. Scattered showers and isolated storms across Cape York Peninsula. A new high over the Great Australian Bight will push colder southerly winds across the western districts during the day, and strong S to SE winds over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters during the evening. Forecast for Friday The rain band is expected to contract eastwards across the central and eastern districts during the day. Moderate to heavy falls are possible about the southern interior and Central Highlands, along with some isolated storms. A colder southerly wind change is also expected to spread across the eastern districts during the day beneath the rain band. Strong SE winds throughout most of the Gulf. Strong S to SE winds also developing after the wind change over the northern tropics. Forecast for Saturday The rain band is expected to clear off the southeast and central coast early in the morning, though some showers and areas of patchy rain are expected to linger over the northern tropics. Fine and sunny over the remainder of the state, though with gusty, cold southerly winds and areas of morning frost about parts of the southeast and southern interior. Fresh to strong S to SE winds continuing over Gulf waters and about the north tropical coast. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A high over the Great Australian Bight should maintain fine and generally clear, but cool to cold conditions across most of Queensland during the outlook period. Widespread areas of morning frost are expected across the southern and central interior, including the inland parts of the southeast districts. The high should move slowly across Victoria early in the new week, pushing onshore winds and at least some isolated showers across Queensland's east coast from Monday. The areas of morning frost should contract inland and become less significant by Tuesday as moisture spreads further inland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
