MELBOURNE - May 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cairns. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure ridge lies across southern Australia. An upper level trough is clearing the southeast region this afternoon. A secondary upper level trough is expected to approach western Queensland for Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent eastern inland districts. Fine over the interior. A little patchy light rain in the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds about the east coast tending strong winds north of Cooktown. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over Gulf Waters and light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Wednesday Showers generally about the east coast and over eastern inland districts. Isolated showers developing over the most of the interior in the afternoon with possible thunderstorms over the central interior late in the day. Patchy rain developing from the northwest in the evening. Fine over the south and southwest of the state. Isolated showers with thunderstorms over western Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds about the east coast tending strong winds north of Cairns. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over Gulf Waters and light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior Forecast for Thursday As the upper level trough enters western Queensland rain areas will develop over most of the interior, extending east and reaching the western Darling Downs late in the day. Rain areas clearing the southwest of the state in the afternoon. Some moderate to heavy falls over the southern interior with possible local thunder. Showers continuing about the east coast and developing inland during the day. A few showers and thunderstorms developing over western Cape York Peninsula in the afternoon. A surface trough or wind change will also progress across the interior during the day with moderate N to NE winds shifting S to SW'ly. Rather cool to cold temperatures in the west associated with the rain. Strong S to SE winds developing in the southern Gulf in the evening with the trough passage. Forecast for Friday The upper level trough will move towards eastern Queensland contracting rain areas to the northeast and east. Becoming cool and dry over the interior with S'ly winds. Some moderate falls expected over the southeast with the rain band. Possible moderate to heavy falls over the southern tropics with rain and thunderstorms as the trough or wind change moves through. Strong SE winds throughout most of the Gulf. Strong S to SE winds also developing after the wind change over the southern tropics. Forecast for Saturday The rain band has cleared Queensland but some showers remain over the northern tropics. Dry and cool over most of the state with S'ly winds. Rather Chilly over southern and central districts in the morning with extensive early frost. Strong SE winds continuing over Gulf waters and about the northeast tropical coast. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Continuing dry over most of the state for Sunday apart from isolated showers about the northeast tropics. Chilly over southern and central districts with widespread early frost. By Monday winds shift more S'ly about the southeast coast with showers redeveloping offshore. Again a chilly morning over most of the interior with extensive early frost. By Tuesday the coastal winds are shifting SE'ly with increasing moisture and shower development. Minimum temperatures over the interior will be on the rise as moisture starts to flow inland. Early morning frost area now contracting to the southeast interior.
