Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 21/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from
Torres Strait to Cooktown.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high pressure ridge lies across southern Australia. An upper level trough
is expected to move eastwards across Queensland's southern border today.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Mainly isolated showers about the eastern districts, the Central Highlands
and the Darling Downs, though with more widespread showers developing during the
day around the Capricornia region. Just the chance of some isolated storms
about the southern border ranges. Fine over the remainder of the state except
for some isolated early morning showers about the state's northwest and the
central interior. Moderate to fresh SE winds across the eastern districts,
strong at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the
interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
A new upper level trough is expected to develop over South Australia, helping
isolated showers to form over most of Queensland's interior districts except the
far southwest. The showers are likely to spread to patchy rain areas over the
state's northwest as the upper trough approaches and strengthens. An onshore
wind flow should produce mainly isolated showers across the eastern districts,
and isolated storms are possible over the state's far north.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level trough should continue strengthening as it approaches
Queensland from the west, spreading a rain band eastwards across most of
Queensland's interior. Some moderate to heavy falls are possible about the
southern and central interior within the cloud band, along with some local
thunder. The rain should contract eastwards out of the Channel Country late in
the day. Meanwhile a strong new high over the Great Australian Bight should
push cool southerly winds into the western districts, and these winds, along
with the areas of cloud, should result in below average daytime temperatures
over western Queensland, particularly in the northwest of the state. Isolated
showers generally over eastern districts ahead of the rain band, spreading to
areas of rain about the far northeast of the state. Some isolated thunderstorms
are also expected in the northern tropics.
Forecast for Friday
The upper level trough should weaken a little as it moves eastwards, but
should still be strong enough to extend a band of rain across the eastern half
of Queensland, and some moderate to possibly heavy falls across the southeast
interior. The rain band should contract steadily eastwards during the day, and
off the coast by late evening. Significantly cooler, gusty S to SW winds are
also expected to extend across the eastern districts during the day.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The upper level trough should clear the southeast coast late on Friday, but
parts of it might remain over the far northern tropics, producing some mainly
isolated showers across the region. Dry, cool to cold and gusty southerly winds
are expected across the state, with morning and daytime temperatures expected to
be well below average. Widespread frosts are expected across at least the
southeast and southern interior on Saturday, with more extensive and significant
frosts expected across the southeast, southern, central and even northwest
interior districts on Sunday. Some isolated showers are possible over the far
northern tropics, and they should also redevelop about the southeast coast
during Monday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
