MELBOURNE - May 19/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of 11S for this evening. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1031 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Fine and sunny over most of the state except for some mainly isolated showers about the east coast, Torres Strait, and the Gulf Country. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast north of Fraser Island, strong at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Sunday The high should weaken a little as it moves eastwards over southeast Australia. The ridge along the east coast of Queensland should also weaken, but the associated onshore flow should push mainly isolated showers over much of the east coast and parts of the Peninsula district. There is also the chance of some isolated afternoon or evening showers spreading inland to the Central Highlands and Northern Goldfields regions. Remaining fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of Queensland, except for some isolated showers about the Gulf Country. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over Queensland's interior, moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast. Forecast for Monday An upper trough is expected to strengthen as it drifts eastwards over the Channel Country, but conditions should nonetheless stay fine over the southern and central interior except for just the chance of a few very isolated showers and storms over the region. Meanwhile the high should move slowly eastwards into the Tasman Sea, whilst maintaining a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The ridge should push mainly isolated showers over the eastern and Peninsula districts, though more widespread and frequent showers are likely about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers should also spread inland to the Central Highlands and Northern Goldfields regions during the day. Forecast for Tuesday The upper trough is expected to pass across the southeast districts, causing showers to increase about the southeast coast. Meanwhile the high over the Tasman should push mainly isolated showers across the Central Coast, and more widespread showers spreading to rain areas over the northeast coast and Peninsula district. Some isolated showers spreading into the eastern interior and over the Gulf Country during the day. Forecast for Wednesday Another upper trough is expected to strengthen over Central Australia, and should extend an area of cloud, showers and isolated storms over most of the western districts. Meanwhile a ridge across southern Australia is likely to keep most of the southern districts fine, though some isolated showers are expected about the southeast coast. Mainly isolated showers are also expected over the remaining eastern districts, with more widespread showers spreading to rain areas about the North Tropical Coast and Peninsula district. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the northern interior. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The upper trough should move eastwards, spreading scattered showers, isolated storms and patchy rain across the central, and then eastern districts late in the working week, before clearing off the coast early in the weekend. A new high in the Bight should push drier, gusty, and cooler winds over Queensland's western districts late in the working week, spreading across the remainder of the state on Saturday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday. Weather & Warnings Australia New South Wales Victoria Queensland Warnings Summary Forecasts Brisbane Forecast Qld.
