Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 15/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Torres Strait and Cooktown.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1028 hPa] near Victoria is moving slowly eastwards and expected to
continue weakening during today. The high extends a ridge along the east
Queensland coast with cool and dry conditions across most of the state.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms near Torres Strait. Isolated
showers along most of the east coast, tending scattered about Fraser Island.
Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A cool to cold morning in most areas with
widespread early morning frosts in the southern interior and southeast inland.
Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times along the east coast and also
over the northwest in the morning.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move into New South Wales as a frontal system moves into the
western Great Australian Bight. So the weather will remain fine and sunny in
most areas of the state. Isolated showers will continue in most east coast areas
while thunderstorms will continue near Torres Strait. Isolated afternoon showers
will develop over eastern parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders
district, as well as northeast parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields
district. A cold morning for most of the interior with some morning frosts in
the southeast and southern inland.
Forecast for Friday
The high will move slowly across New South Wales as the frontal system
reaches southeastern Australia. The weather will remain fine in most areas of
the state. Isolated showers will continue about the east coast while storms will
continue through Torres Strait. Cloudy conditions will develop over the central
and tropical interior with possible morning drizzle and isolated afternoon
showers. The SE trade winds along the northeast tropical coast will strengthen
as a trough approaches from the east. Isolated morning frosts are expected over
the southeast interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The frontal system will weaken over the southern Tasman Sea as a new high
moves across the Great Australian Bight. So the firm ridge along the east coast
will be maintained as will the moderate to fresh SE trade winds. These winds
will be strong about the far northeast tropical coast due to a trough over the
northwest Coral Sea. These winds will continue to direct showers into most east
coast districts and also maintain cloudy conditions over parts of the interior.
Some morning drizzle may occur over the central and tropical interior while
isolated afternoon showers will also occur in the area. An upper trough will
approach southeastern Australia.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The ridge along the east coast will be maintained as the high moves into the
Tasman Sea. Winds along the east coast will shift more E'ly and spread into the
interior. As a result, moisture levels will slowly increase across much of the
state. Showers will continue in most east coast districts. As well, showers will
become more widespread over parts of the eastern interior and spread into the
central interior. The new upper trough will move into and amplify over central
and southeast Australia from Sunday. As a result, cloud will increase over much
of the state from Monday onwards with showers increasing and rain developing
mainly over northern and eastern districts from about Tuesday onwards.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
