MELBOURNE - May 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown from Monday afternoon. A Strong Wind Warning for southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters from Tuesday morning. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1032 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge and dry southerly winds over most of Queensland. The high is expected to drift slowly eastwards during the week. Forecast for the rest of Monday Fine across most of the state. Only isolated light showers about the north tropical coast and scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over far northern Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait islands. Cool in western, central and southern districts. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds, gusty at times about the northern districts. Forecast for Tuesday The high should lie over the eastern reaches of the Great Australian Bight while extending cool and dry south to southeast winds across most of Queensland. Below average temperatures are expected across most of the state, with widespread areas of early morning frost about the southern and southeast interior, and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district. Fresh to strong onshore winds should produce some isolated showers about parts of the east coast, with more widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms possible near Torres Strait. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to gradually drift over Victoria and weaken, but it still should be able to maintain the fine and mostly sunny conditions over most of Queensland. The high should push some isolated showers and a mainly moderate to fresh south to southeast wind flow along the east coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Torres Strait. Temperatures remaining below average across most of the state, with widespread areas of early morning frost about the southern and southeast interior, and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to drift towards the New South Wales coast while maintaining fine and mostly sunny conditions over the Queensland interior. The high should push mainly isolated showers and moderate to fresh SE winds over most of the east coast and nearby inland areas. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Torres Strait. Minimum temperatures remaining below average across the interior, and more isolated areas of early morning frost over parts of the southern and southeast interior. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday A ridge of high pressure should remain over New South Wales, and is likely to maintain fine conditions across Queensland's interior, and some showers and moderate to fresh SE winds over the eastern districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Torres Strait. Morning temperatures remaining below average in the southern interior and parts of western Queensland, though any frosts should be confined to isolated parts of the southern and southeast interior.
