Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters
between Cape Grenville and Cooktown for Monday afternoon.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1030 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge over
Queensland with dry and cool SW to SE winds expected over most areas on Monday.
The high is expected to move slowly eastwards during the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Fine over most of the state except for isolated showers about the north
tropical coast and scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and areas of patchy
rain over northern Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait islands. Moderate
to fresh SW to SE winds, tending fresh and gusty W to SW over southeast
districts.
Forecast for Monday
Fine across most of the state. Only isolated showers about the north tropical
coast and scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and areas of patchy rain
over far northern Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait islands. Cool in
western, central and southern districts with early morning frosts in the
southeast and southern interior. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds, gusty at
times in the north and near the coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high should remain near the eastern Great Australian Bight while
extending cool and dry south to southeast winds across most of Queensland.
Below average temperatures are expected across most of the state, with
widespread areas of early morning frost about the southern and southeast
interior, and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district. Fresh to
strong onshore winds are expected to maintain isolated showers about the
northeast Queensland coast, tending to scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms near Torres Strait. An upper level trough moving over the
southeast will provide enough instability for isolated showers to develop along
the southern Queensland coast, though the southerly flow will ensure these only
affect the exposed coast and islands.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to gradually drift over Victoria and weaken, maintaining
fine and mostly sunny conditions over most of Queensland. However a firm ridge
should remain along the east Queensland coast, and it should direct isolated
showers and moderate to fresh SE winds along most of the east coast. Stronger SE
winds along the far northern coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
over Torres Strait. Temperatures remaining below the seasonal average across
most of the state, with widespread areas of early morning frost expected once
again about the southern and southeast interior, and parts of the Central
Highlands and Coalfields district.
Forecast for Thursday
The high is expected to move over New South Wales and maintain fine and
mostly sunny conditions over the Queensland interior. A ridge will persist along
the east Queensland coast and should continue to direct showers and moderate to
fresh SE winds about most of the east coast and adjacent inland, with stronger
SE winds along the far northern coast. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected to continue over Torres Strait. Minimum temperatures
remaining below the seasonal average across the interior, with areas of early
morning frost expected in parts of the southern and southeast interior.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high should move to the New South Wales coast and remain there as it
gradually weakens and a new high moves across the Great Australian Bight. A
ridge should maintain some showers and moderate to fresh SE winds about most of
the east coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to
persist over Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected to
continue over the Queensland interior. Minimum temperatures are expected to
remain below the seasonal average in the southern interior and parts of western
Queensland though any frosts should be confined to isolated parts of the
southern and southeast interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
