MELBOURNE - May 12/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Great Australian Bight [1029 hPa] extends a ridge into southern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Fine over most of the state except for some isolated showers about the central and northeast coast, and some scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and areas of patchy rain over northern Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait islands. A cooler day in the southern interior. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds, tending fresh and gusty W to SW over southeast districts. A very high fire danger over the state's southeast, and over the Capricornia district. Forecast for Monday The high should move over the eastern reaches of the Great Australian Bight while pushing dry, cooler southwest to southeast winds across the southern and central districts. Below average temperatures over the southern and central districts, and areas of early frost about the southeast and southern interior. Remaining fine across most of the state except for some isolated showers about the northeast coast and scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and areas of patchy rain over northern Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands. Forecast for Tuesday The high should remain near the eastern reaches of the Great Australian Bight while extending cool and dry south to southeast winds across most of Queensland. Below average temperatures are expected across most of the state, with widespread areas of early morning frost about the southern and southeast interior, and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district. Fresh to strong onshore winds are expected to maintain isolated showers about the northeast Queensland coast, more widespread with isolated thunderstorms near Torres Strait. An upper level trough moving over the southeast will provide enough instability for isolated showers to develop along the southern Queensland coast, though the southerly flow will ensure these only affect the exposed coast and islands. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to gradually drift over Victoria and weaken, maintaining fine and mostly sunny conditions over most of Queensland. However a firm ridge should remain along the east Queensland coast, and it should direct isolated showers and moderate to fresh SE winds along most of the east coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Torres Strait. Temperatures remaining below the seasonal average across most of the state, with widespread areas of early morning frost expected about the southern and southeast interior, and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The high should move to the New South Wales coast and remain there as it gradually weakens near the end of the week. The high should maintain fine and sunny conditions across almost all of Queensland, and temperatures should remain below average across most of the interior, though frosts should become less significant and more isolated by the end of the week. A ridge should maintain isolated showers and moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to persist near Torres Strait. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday. Weather & Warnings Australia New South Wales Victoria Queensland Warnings Summary Forecasts Brisbane Forecast Qld.
