MELBOURNE - May 12/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A deep low pressure system south of Tasmania is moving steadily eastwards across the Tasman Sea, while a front will cross Bass Strait early Sunday morning. The next high pressure system will cross waters south of the Bight later Sunday and during Monday to be centred over southwest Victoria on Tuesday. The high will then move northeastwards across Victoria on Wednesday as another front approaches the Bight. Forecast for the rest of SaturdayScattered showers and possible hail over southern and mountain districts, increasing to areas of rain over eastern suburbs of Melbourne and across parts of Gippsland tonight. Isolated showers penetrating just north of the divide, but generally dry across the northern plains. Showers falling as snow above 1300 metres. Cold with fresh to strong west to southwesterly winds, reaching gale force at times about the Alps and the Gippsland coast.Sunday 13 MayScattered showers over southern and mountain districts; more widespread and tending to rain areas over Gippsland at first. Local hail possible across Gippsland and snow on the ranges above 1300 metres. Isolated showers over most northern areas but dry in the far northwest. Cold with fresh southwesterly winds, strong to gale force about the coast, tending more southerly in the afternoon.Monday 14 MayIsolated showers in southern and mountain areas, more scattered over parts of Gippsland and the central coast. Snow showers above 1300 metres, rising to 1600 metres in the afternoon. Fine and mainly sunny in the northwest. Cool to cold with moderate to fresh southwest to southerly winds.Tuesday 15 MayLocal morning fog and frost inland. Isolated showers in southern and mountain areas, scattered over parts of the Gippsland coast. Snow showers above 1600 metres. Light to moderate southwest to southerly winds.Wednesday 16 MayCold at first with early morning frost and widespread fog inland. Areas of drizzle about the central and Gippsland coasts, clearing during the morning. A cool to mild, fine and mainly sunny afternoon throughout.
