Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 12/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1019 hPa] over the northern Tasman Sea extends a ridge along most of
the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies over southern Queensland,
linked to a cold front over the Tasman Sea, and is expected to move off the
southern Queensland coast on Sunday with gusty SW winds in its wake. A high
[1028 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge over southwest
Queensland and is expected to strengthen on Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over far northern
Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers about the remaining tropical coast and
nearby ranges. Isolated showers near the southeast border ranges, clearing
during the evening. Fine and partly cloudy elsewhere. Mostly light to moderate
SE to NE winds, tending moderate to fresh SE along the tropical coast.
Forecast for Sunday
Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape
York Peninsula. Isolated showers about the tropical coast and nearby ranges
north of about Bowen. Morning fogs about the coast and adjacent inland south of
about Townsville. A cooler day in the southern interior. Moderate to fresh SW to
SE winds, tending fresh and gusty W to SW over southeast districts. A very high
fire danger in the Southeast Coast, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Wide Bay and
Burnett, and Capricornia forecast districts.
Forecast for Monday
The high should move into the far eastern Great Australian Bight while
pushing cool and dry southwest to southeast winds and fine conditions across
most of Queensland. As a result, temperatures are expected to be below the
seasonal average in western, central and southern Queensland with areas of early
frost expected about the southeast and southern interior. The ridge along the
tropical coast is expected to strengthen, leading to an increase in
southeasterly trade winds and maintaining isolated showers about the north
tropical coast. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms are
expected to persist about far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move into western Victoria and extend cool and dry
south to southeast winds across most of the state. Temperatures remaining below
the seasonal average across most of the state with widespread areas of early
morning frost about the southern and southeast interior, and parts of the
Central Highlands and Coalfields district. Fresh to strong onshore winds are
expected to maintain isolated showers about the northeast Queensland coast, more
widespread with isolated thunderstorms near Torres Strait. Strong winds are also
expected to occur over the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning. An
upper level trough moving over the southeast will provide enough instability for
isolated showers to develop along the southern Queensland coast, though the
southerly flow will ensure these only affect the exposed coast and islands.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to gradually drift over Victoria and weaken. However,
the firm ridge will be maintained along most of the east Queensland coast with
isolated showers and moderate to fresh S to SE winds, strong at times in the far
north. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to persist near
Torres Strait. Remaining fine and mostly sunny over the interior. Temperatures
remaining below the seasonal average across most of the state with widespread
areas of early morning frost expected about the southern and southeast interior,
and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high should remain over southeast Australia and continue to weaken as
another high enters the Great Australian Bight. The ridge will persist along the
east Queensland coast with isolated showers and moderate to fresh SE winds.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to persist near Torres
Strait. Remaining fine elsewhere. Minimum temperatures remaining below the
seasonal average across most of the interior, though frosts should become more
isolated by Friday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
