MELBOURNE - May 10/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Cape Grenville to Cooktown. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown and Northeast Gulf waters north of 11S for Friday afternoon. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over southeast Queensland will move slowly eastwards into the northern Tasman Sea and gradually weaken during Friday, with the firm ridge in place along the east coast of Queensland will also beginning to weaken. A weak upper level trough and associated frontal system will move into the southwest of the state late Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Fine and mostly clear through the interior of the state and about the southeast. Isolated showers along the exposed east coast north of Fraser Island, possibly tending to scattered at times about the north tropical coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the northeast tropical coast. Forecast for Friday Isolated showers along the east coast north of Fraser Island, contracting northwards during the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions across the interior of the state. Some morning fog areas about the far southern coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh about the northeast coast. A moderate SW to S wind change reaching southwestern Queensland. Forecast for Saturday An upper trough will amplify over southeast Australia but will have little impact on Queensland's weather. Only some patchy high cloud will develop across the southern and central tropics, with no rainfall expected. The ridge along the east coast will continue to weaken. Southeast trade showers will continue about the east coast north of about Mackay but will contract northwards to Cardwell by evening. Some morning fog areas will occur about the Capricornia and southern coast. Fine and sunny conditions will continue over the central and southern interior but becoming cooler as the frontal system moves eastwards across the state. Isolated storms with some rain areas will occur through Torres Strait. Forecast for Sunday The cold front will move off the southern Queensland coast during the morning, and reach the St Lawrence area by the evening. Cooler southwest to south winds will spread into the south of the state in the wake of the front. Further northwards, moderate southeasterly trade winds will continue along the east coast and direct isolated showers onto the exposed coast north of Cardwell. Isolated thunderstorms and rain areas will continue through Torres Strait and may spread onto far northern Cape York Peninsula. Morning fog areas will occur before the frontal system mainly about the Central and Capricornia coasts. Forecast for Monday the frontal system will decay about the Central Coast, with a new ridge building into southern Queensland from a large high in the Great Australian Bight. As a result, southeasterly Trade winds will strengthen once more about the tropics, and may become strong in coastal waters north of Cooktown. This flow will continue to support isolated to scattered showers about the east coast north of about Cardwell, and one or two thunderstorms about Torres Strait. Stable conditions and dry air will remain in place elsewhere, with a cool morning and some frosts about the southern inland. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Stable conditions and relatively dry air will remain in place over most of the state during this period. As a result fine and sunny conditions will continue in most areas. Moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue to direct isolated showers onto the east tropical coast north of Cardwell. Isolated showers will develop about the exposed coast south of Fraser Island from late Tuesday onwards as the flow shifts south to southeast and an upper trough moves into the Tasman Sea. The storms and rain areas in the far north should weaken during Tuesday and Wednesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
