Weather Situation
A high over southeast Queensland will move slowly eastwards into the northern
Tasman Sea and gradually weaken during Friday, with the firm ridge in place
along the east coast of Queensland will also beginning to weaken. A weak upper
level trough and associated frontal system will move into the southwest of the
state late Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Fine and mostly clear through the interior of the state and about the
southeast. Isolated showers along the exposed east coast north of Fraser Island,
possibly tending to scattered at times about the north tropical coast. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait. Mostly light to moderate SE to
NE winds, fresh at times along the northeast tropical coast.
Forecast for Friday
Isolated showers along the east coast north of Fraser Island, contracting
northwards during the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through Torres
Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions across the interior of the state. Some
morning fog areas about the far southern coast. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds, fresh about the northeast coast. A moderate SW to S wind change reaching
southwestern Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
An upper trough will amplify over southeast Australia but will have little
impact on Queensland's weather. Only some patchy high cloud will develop
across the southern and central tropics, with no rainfall expected. The ridge
along the east coast will continue to weaken. Southeast trade showers will
continue about the east coast north of about Mackay but will contract northwards
to Cardwell by evening. Some morning fog areas will occur about the Capricornia
and southern coast. Fine and sunny conditions will continue over the central and
southern interior but becoming cooler as the frontal system moves eastwards
across the state. Isolated storms with some rain areas will occur through Torres
Strait.
Forecast for Sunday
The cold front will move off the southern Queensland coast during the
morning, and reach the St Lawrence area by the evening. Cooler southwest to
south winds will spread into the south of the state in the wake of the front.
Further northwards, moderate southeasterly trade winds will continue along the
east coast and direct isolated showers onto the exposed coast north of Cardwell.
Isolated thunderstorms and rain areas will continue through Torres Strait and
may spread onto far northern Cape York Peninsula. Morning fog areas will occur
before the frontal system mainly about the Central and Capricornia coasts.
Forecast for Monday
the frontal system will decay about the Central Coast, with a new ridge
building into southern Queensland from a large high in the Great Australian
Bight. As a result, southeasterly Trade winds will strengthen once more about
the tropics, and may become strong in coastal waters north of Cooktown. This
flow will continue to support isolated to scattered showers about the east coast
north of about Cardwell, and one or two thunderstorms about Torres Strait.
Stable conditions and dry air will remain in place elsewhere, with a cool
morning and some frosts about the southern inland.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Stable conditions and relatively dry air will remain in place over most of
the state during this period. As a result fine and sunny conditions will
continue in most areas. Moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue to direct
isolated showers onto the east tropical coast north of Cardwell. Isolated
showers will develop about the exposed coast south of Fraser Island from late
Tuesday onwards as the flow shifts south to southeast and an upper trough moves
into the Tasman Sea. The storms and rain areas in the far north should weaken
during Tuesday and Wednesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
