MELBOURNE - May 9/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters Cape Grenville to Cooktown for Thursday afternoon. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over northeast New South Wales will continue to move slowly eastwards and will extend a strengthening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A frontal system will move into the southwest of the state late Friday and off the coast during Sunday and early Monday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Fine and clear over most areas of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait, and isolated showers along the exposed east coast north of Cardwell. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the northeast tropical coast. Forecast for Thursday Fine and mostly sunny through the interior of the state and about the southeast. Isolated showers along the exposed east coast north of Fraser Island, tending to scattered at times about the north tropical coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait. Some early morning fogs may occur about the far southern coast. A warm day in the west. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the northeast tropical coast. Forecast for Friday The high over the Tasman Sea will begin to weaken while moving eastwards. Moderate to fresh southeast trade winds will continue along the east tropical coast. Trade wind showers will continue in exposed areas of the east coast but will start to contract northwards during the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue across the interior of the state. Some morning fog areas will occur about the far southern coast. A frontal system will move into the southwest late in the day. Forecast for Saturday A new upper trough will amplify over southeast Australia, although it will have little impact on Queensland's weather, with just some high cloud developing across the southern and central tropics producing little if any rainfall. The ridge along the east coast will weaken during the day, although isolated showers will continue about the east coast north of about Mackay. Some morning fog areas will occur about the Capricornia and southern coast. Fine and sunny conditions will continue over the central and southern interior but becoming cooler as the frontal system moves eastwards across the state. Forecast for Sunday The cold front will move off the southern Queensland coast during the morning, and reach the St Lawrence area by the evening, with a southwest to southerly wind change, but dry conditions will rule out any chance of rainfall with the passage of this feature. Further north, the ridge will remain in place along the east coast, with trade wind southeasterlies and a few showers near the northeast tropical coast, and a thunderstorm or two about Torres Strait. Morning fog is again likely, ahead of the wind change. Cooler conditions will become established over the far south. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The stable conditions and relatively dry air will remain in place over most of the state. As a result fine and sunny conditions will continue in most areas, although moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue to direct isolated showers onto the northeast tropical coast.
