Weather Situation
A high [1017 hPa] over New South Wales is moving slowly northeastwards and
will continue to extend a ridge across most of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Fine and sunny in most areas. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through
Torres Strait. Isolated showers will develop about the north tropical coast.
Possible isolated early morning frosts over the southeast interior. Early
morning fog areas about the southern and central coast. Light to moderate SW to
SE winds, fresh at times along the north-east tropical coast. Winds shifting E
to NE over the south-west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to move into the northern Tasman Sea overnight and
remain slow moving. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue in most areas
of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue through Torres
Strait while isolated showers will occur along the exposed east coast north of
Cardwell. Some early morning fogs will occur about the southern coast. A warm
day will occur in the west.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will continue to be slow moving and will maintain a firm ridge along
the east coast of Queensland. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue
through the interior of the state and about the southeast. The onshore flow is
expected to freshen along the east tropical coast and become strong north of
Cooktown. SE trade showers will occur along the exposed east coast north of
Fraser Island and tend to scattered at times about the north tropical coast.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue through Torres Strait. Some
early morning fogs may occur about the far southern coast. A warm day will occur
in the west.
Forecast for Friday
The high over the Tasman Sea will begin to weaken while moving eastwards.
Moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue along the east tropical coast and
will decrease below strong north of Cooktown. SE trade showers will continue in
exposed areas of the east coast but will start to contract northwards during the
day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue about the far north of
Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will
continue across the interior of the state. Some morning fog areas will occur
about the far southern coast. A frontal system will move into the south-west
late in the day.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A new upper trough will amplify into eastern areas of the continent during
the weekend. This upper trough will generate a cloud band with little or no rain
across the southern and central tropics. The ridge along the east coast will
continue to move northwards and weaken. As a result winds over southern areas of
the state will shift to the north before the frontal system which will move off
the coast during Sunday. Cooler gusty winds will circulate across most of the
state in the wake of the front. Moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue
over the far northern tropics and direct isolated showers onto the east coast.
Morning fog areas will be widespread over the south-east of the state during the
weekend.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
