MELBOURNE - May 8/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1017 hPa] over New South Wales is moving slowly northeastwards and will continue to extend a ridge across most of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Fine and sunny in most areas. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait. Isolated showers will develop about the north tropical coast. Possible isolated early morning frosts over the southeast interior. Early morning fog areas about the southern and central coast. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times along the north-east tropical coast. Winds shifting E to NE over the south-west. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move into the northern Tasman Sea overnight and remain slow moving. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue in most areas of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue through Torres Strait while isolated showers will occur along the exposed east coast north of Cardwell. Some early morning fogs will occur about the southern coast. A warm day will occur in the west. Forecast for Thursday The high will continue to be slow moving and will maintain a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue through the interior of the state and about the southeast. The onshore flow is expected to freshen along the east tropical coast and become strong north of Cooktown. SE trade showers will occur along the exposed east coast north of Fraser Island and tend to scattered at times about the north tropical coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue through Torres Strait. Some early morning fogs may occur about the far southern coast. A warm day will occur in the west. Forecast for Friday The high over the Tasman Sea will begin to weaken while moving eastwards. Moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue along the east tropical coast and will decrease below strong north of Cooktown. SE trade showers will continue in exposed areas of the east coast but will start to contract northwards during the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue about the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue across the interior of the state. Some morning fog areas will occur about the far southern coast. A frontal system will move into the south-west late in the day. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday A new upper trough will amplify into eastern areas of the continent during the weekend. This upper trough will generate a cloud band with little or no rain across the southern and central tropics. The ridge along the east coast will continue to move northwards and weaken. As a result winds over southern areas of the state will shift to the north before the frontal system which will move off the coast during Sunday. Cooler gusty winds will circulate across most of the state in the wake of the front. Moderate to fresh SE trade winds will continue over the far northern tropics and direct isolated showers onto the east coast. Morning fog areas will be widespread over the south-east of the state during the weekend. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
