MELBOURNE - Apr 26/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters between Cardwell and Gladstone for Friday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1028 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge across southern Queensland with cool S to SE winds across most of the state. An upper level low near far northwest Queensland extends a cloud band over most of Queensland. A trough over the Coral Sea is expected to deepen and move west, to be located off the tropical coast by late Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Cloudy and cool to cold with patchy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the north and west. Isolated showers and light rain over central districts increasing during the evening. Fine but partly cloudy over the southeast and southern interior. Moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times along the tropical coast. Forecast for Friday Cloudy with areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over the eastern tropics and central districts. Moderate to heavy falls over the southeast tropics, central districts and possibly the northern Wide Bay and Burnett. Cloudy with light rain over the southern interior and southeast, increasing during the day. Light rain clearing from the far west. Cool to cold across most of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, becoming fresh to strong and gusty along the tropical coast during the day. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough is expected to remain over western Queensland, but the cloud band should weaken over parts of the central and southern interior as drier air flows in from the west, with lighter rain expected over these regions. Enough moisture should remain about the eastern districts to produce areas of rain and isolated storms south of about Bowen and moderate to heavy falls about the Central Coast, Capricornia, Central Highlands and Coalfields and the Wide Bay and Burnett districts. The trough off the central and Fraser coasts should begin to move slowly east late in the day, but strong and gusty winds are expected to persist along this section of the coast. Scattered showers about the northeast tropics with isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny over the west. Temperatures remaining below average across the state. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough is expected to move steadily eastwards across the southern districts, pushing the rain band offshore early in the morning. The high should move over Victoria and extend onshore winds and generally isolated showers over Queensland's eastern districts, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula district. Temperatures remaining below average across most of the state. Forecast for Monday The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea and produce a moderate to fresh onshore wind flow and isolated to scattered showers over Queensland's eastern districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine over western Queensland. Temperatures remaining below average across most of the state. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high is expected to move east towards New Zealand by mid-week and maintain an onshore wind flow onto the east Queensland coast with showers, spreading into the eastern interior during the afternoon and evening. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. The next trough system is expected to move into western Queensland by Wednesday and move east across the state with the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures returning to near average by mid week. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
