MELBOURNE - Apr 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a strong ridge across southern Queensland, and cool, dry southerly winds across most of the state. An upper level low over the Northern Territory extends a cloud band over Queensland's interior. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Patchy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the north and west. Some isolated light showers across the central districts. Cool to cold temperatures in most areas, apart from the eastern tropics. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds. Forecast for Friday The upper low is expected to weaken over the Channel Country, but should still be able to maintain an extensive cloud band over northern and central Queensland, and extend cloud over southeast Queensland. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected with the cloud over the eastern tropics and central districts, but only patchy light rain is expected over the southern districts. The upper trough should also produce some moderate to heavy falls about the southern tropics and central districts, particularly near the coast as a surface trough forms just offshore. Fresh to possibly strong winds are also expected along the south tropical coast near the surface trough. Temperatures will remain below average across the state, particularly over the interior districts. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough is expected remain near the Channel Country, but the cloud band should weaken over parts of the central and southern interior as drier air flows in from the west, with little to no rain expected over these regions. Enough moisture should remain about the eastern districts to produce areas of rain and isolated storms south of about Bowen, and some moderate to possibly heavy falls about the parts of the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Central Highlands districts. Isolated showers about the northeast districts, and isolated showers and storms over the Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny over the western districts. Temperatures remaining below average across the state. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough is expected to move steadily eastwards across the southern districts, pushing the rain band offshore early in the morning. A high over Victoria should push onshore winds and isolated showers over Queensland's eastern districts, and scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the Peninsula district. Temperatures remaining below average across most of the state. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea, but will maintain an onshore wind flow and isolated showers over Queensland's eastern districts early in the new week, extending into the interior districts by mid week. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures returning to near average by mid week. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
