Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria
waters.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a strong ridge across southern
Queensland, and cool, dry southerly winds across most of the state. An upper
level low over the Northern Territory extends a cloud band over Queensland's
interior.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Patchy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the north and west.
Some isolated light showers across the central districts. Cool to cold
temperatures in most areas, apart from the eastern tropics. Moderate to fresh SW
to SE winds.
Forecast for Friday
The upper low is expected to weaken over the Channel Country, but should
still be able to maintain an extensive cloud band over northern and central
Queensland, and extend cloud over southeast Queensland. Areas of rain and
isolated thunderstorms are expected with the cloud over the eastern tropics and
central districts, but only patchy light rain is expected over the southern
districts. The upper trough should also produce some moderate to heavy falls
about the southern tropics and central districts, particularly near the coast as
a surface trough forms just offshore. Fresh to possibly strong winds are also
expected along the south tropical coast near the surface trough. Temperatures
will remain below average across the state, particularly over the interior
districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper level trough is expected remain near the Channel Country, but the
cloud band should weaken over parts of the central and southern interior as
drier air flows in from the west, with little to no rain expected over these
regions. Enough moisture should remain about the eastern districts to produce
areas of rain and isolated storms south of about Bowen, and some moderate to
possibly heavy falls about the parts of the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Central
Highlands districts. Isolated showers about the northeast districts, and
isolated showers and storms over the Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny
over the western districts. Temperatures remaining below average across the
state.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough is expected to move steadily eastwards across the southern
districts, pushing the rain band offshore early in the morning. A high over
Victoria should push onshore winds and isolated showers over Queensland's
eastern districts, and scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected
over the Peninsula district. Temperatures remaining below average across most of
the state.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea, but will maintain an
onshore wind flow and isolated showers over Queensland's eastern districts early
in the new week, extending into the interior districts by mid week. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula.
Temperatures returning to near average by mid week.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
