MELBOURNE - Apr 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1029 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a strong ridge over central Australia and western Queensland with cool to cold and dry SW to SE winds over the Queensland interior. The high is expected to weaken late Thursday. A surface trough lies over the Coral Sea. An upper level trough and low over the Northern Territory producing areas of cloud over western and southern Queensland. The upper low is expected to move into far northwest Queensland by late Thursday night with increasing rain areas for the northwest and tropics. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Cloudy over most of the state. Patchy rain areas over the northwest. Isolated showers about the tropical coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Cool to cold temperatures in the west and south. Moderate to locally fresh SW to SE winds. Forecast for Thursday Cloudy over most of the state. Patchy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the north and west, increasing during the day and extending into central districts. Cool to cold temperatures in most areas, apart from the eastern tropics. Early morning frost in the eastern Warrego, Maranoa, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Moderate to locally fresh SW to SE winds. Forecast for Friday The upper low is expected to weaken over western Queensland with the cloud and rain clearing from this region during the day. However, the upper trough is expected to maintain an extensive cloud band over northern and central Queensland, and extending into southeast Queensland. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected with the cloud over the eastern tropics and central districts, with lighter rain expected over the southern interior and southeast Queensland. Moderate to heavy falls are likely about the southern tropics and central districts as the upper trough moves over western Queensland and the surface trough deepens and moves closer to the tropical coast. Strong winds are also likely to develop during the day near this trough along the tropical coast. Temperatures will remain below average across the state, and particularly during the day associated with the thick cloud cover. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough is expected to move only slowly east into the central and southern interior of the state. The extensive cloud band over the eastern half of the state will continue to produce areas of rain, gradually contracting east. Isolated thunderstorms mainly over the eastern tropics. The deep surface trough along the tropical coast will assist with producing strong winds and some locally heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast to the Wide Bay and adjacent interior, but particularly about the Central Coast, Capricornia and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts. Fine and mostly sunny over the western districts. Temperatures remaining below average across most of the state. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough is expected to move over eastern Queensland, with the thick cloud and associated rain band contracting offshore during the morning. The surface trough off the tropical coast is also expected to move east away from the coast with winds easing a little. Isolated showers are expected to persist about the east coast and adjacent inland for the remainder of the day as the high moves over southeast Australia. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures remaining below average across most of the state. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea and strengthen during the outlook period. The high will extend a firm ridge with fresh to strong SE winds returning to most of the east coast. The onshore winds will drive showers onto the east coast and also into the eastern interior by Wednesday. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures returning to near average. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
