Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Nil.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak ridge lies along the east coast. An upper level trough is producing a
cloud band across Queensland's southern districts, although the associated
rainfall is generally very light. A ridge over the Great Australian Bight is
pushing cooler, drier air into southern inland Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Patchy, mainly light rain and showers and are expected to extend from the
northwest of the state to the southeast, and relatively cool conditions are
expected beneath it and across the southern districts. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms developing during the day from the Capricorn Coast to the
far southeast, with a shower or two developing about the central coast. Moderate
S to SE winds, tending NE to NW near the southern coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough will contract off the southeast Queensland coast, however
another upper level trough is expected to strengthen into an upper low near the
northwestern Queensland border. A cloud band and patchy, mainly light rain areas
will therefore persist through the northwest of the state. Some areas of patchy
cloud may also remain over the state's interior and the southeast, but very
little, if any, rain is expected due to the dry air in place beneath it.
Otherwise fine across the state except for some isolated showers about the
central coast, the northeast coast and the nearby inland areas. Dry and cool
southerly winds should extend through most of Queensland, with maximum
temperatures well below average, except along the Central Coast and in the far
northern tropics.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper low will move into the state's northwest, maintaining a rain band
and area of isolated thunderstorms over the northwest, extending through the
western and central interior districts during the day. Instability will also
increase along the tropical east and central coasts and adjacent inland in
response to the upper system and increasing low level moisture, leading to
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. The southern districts should be
fine, though cool, with areas of early frost expected about parts of the
southern and southeast interior.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough should weaken over the Channel Country, but will still be
able to extend a cloud band with areas of rain, showers and isolated storms over
the central interior and most of the eastern districts. Some cloud areas are
also expected over the western districts nearer the upper trough, along with
some patchy, mainly light rain areas.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The upper level trough is expected to progress slowly eastwards over the
southwestern interior during Friday, and become reinforced by a new upper system
over the weekend. This will maintain extensive cloud, rain areas and
thunderstorms over the tropics, with some moderate to heavy falls may develop
about the coast and nearby inland from the North Tropical Coast to Fraser
Island. Some rain areas are also likely to extend into the southeast on
Saturday, before clearing offshore by Sunday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
