Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Nil.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak ridge lies along the east coast. An upper level trough is extending a
cloud band across Queensland's southern districts. A ridge over the Great
Australian Bight is pushing cooler, drier air into the Channel Country.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Cloudy with patchy, mainly light rain areas across the southern interior
districts. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state, except for
some isolated showers about parts of the Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast regions.
Dry, relatively cool, light to moderate SW winds over the state's southwest, and
light to moderate SE to NE winds over the remainder of the state, fresh at times
about the northeast coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough and the associated band of patchy, mainly light rain,
showers and isolated thunderstorms is expected to extend from the northwest of
the state to the southeast, and relatively cool conditions are expected beneath
it and across the southern districts. A surface trough over the Coral Sea is
expected to move onshore, producing showers and possibly some isolated
thunderstorms from the central coast to the Fraser coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough will contract off the southeast Queensland coast, however
another upper level trough is expected to strengthen near the northwestern
Queensland border. A cloud band and patchy, mainly light rain areas will
therefore persist through the northwest of the state. Some isolated
thunderstorms are also possible within the cloud band. Some areas of patchy
cloud may also remain over the state's interior and the southeast, but very
little, if any, rain is expected beneath it. Otherwise fine across the state
except for some isolated showers and storms about the central coast, the
northeast coast and the nearby inland areas. Dry and cool southerly winds
should extend through most of Queensland, with maximum temperatures well below
average, except along the Central Coast and in the far northern tropics.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough or low may move into the state's northwest, maintaining a
rain band and area of isolated thunderstorms over the northwest. The cloud band
is expected to extend through the western and central interior districts during
the day. Instability will also increase along the tropical east and central
coasts and adjacent inland in response to the upper system and increasing low
level moisture, leading to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. The
southern districts should be fine, though cool, with areas of frost expected
about parts of the southern and southeast interior.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough may weaken over the Channel Country, but will still be able
to extend a cloud band with areas of rain, showers and isolated storms over the
central interior and most of the eastern districts. Some cloud areas are also
expected over the western districts nearer the upper trough, along with some
patchy, mainly light rain areas.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The upper level trough is expected to weaken further over the southern
interior during Saturday, causing the cloud band to weaken over the central
districts. A surface trough may produce scattered showers and isolated storms
across parts of the east coast and nearby inland areas during the weekend, with
more isolated activity expected over the far northern tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
