Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Nil.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1032 hPa] southeast of New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the
tropical east coast of Queensland and has generated large E'ly swells along the
southern Queensland coast. The swells will decrease during today as the high
drifts further east. An upper level trough will move east over the southern
interior of the state today, while a surface trough will move east over the
Channel Country district.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Early morning fog patches over eastern districts and near the southern Gulf
of Carpentaria coast. Cool and cloudy with patchy rain and showers over the
northwest of the state and through the southern interior, extending into the
western Darling Downs during the day. Possible isolated thunderstorms near the
southern inland border, and also over the eastern Darling Downs and Granite Belt
district during the afternoon. Mostly fine over remaining parts of the
southeast, with only isolated afternoon and evening showers inland and over
Fraser Island. Dry and cool S'ly winds developing over the far southwest. Mostly
fine in the tropics with only isolated showers and possible thunderstorms near
the far northern Peninsula coast and the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the coast north of Fraser
Island, tending NE to NW to the south. Light to moderate E to NE winds over the
eastern interior, tending SE to SW in the west
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough and associated band of patchy rain, showers and
isolated thunderstorms are expected to move east and extend from the northwest
of the state to the southeast coast. Cool, dry southwesterly winds will extend
further east over the interior in the wake of the rain band. A surface trough
over the Coral Sea will move towards the Capricorn and Fraser coasts, producing
showers and possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers will develop along
the central coast, with isolated thunderstorms continuing over the far northern
Cape York Peninsula coast. Maximum temperatures will be well below average over
western Queensland.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough will contract off the southeast Queensland coast, however at
the same time, a new upper level trough is expected to intensify near the
northwestern Queensland border. A cloud band and rain areas will therefore
persist through the northwest of the state, with possible isolated thunderstorms
due to increasing instability. Patchy cloud will persist through southern
central Queensland to the Sunshine coast, although with only light rain areas or
isolated showers due to limited moisture. Dry and cool southerly winds will
extend through remaining parts of southern Queensland, with maximum temperatures
well below average. Maximum temperatures will also be very cool under the cloud
band in the northwest. Instability will most likely increase through the central
coast and adjacent inland due to the presence of a weak trough, with showers and
possible isolated thunderstorms expected. Isolated showers will also develop on
the east tropical coast and continue through Cape York Peninsula and Torres
Strait with possible isolated thunderstorms.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough or low near the northwest border will most likely move
southeast into the state, producing a band of rain and isolated thunderstorms
that will gradually extend from the northwest of the state through western
districts and the central interior during the day. Instability will also
increase along the tropical east and central coasts and adjacent inland in
response to the upper system and increasing low level moisture, leading to
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Fine conditions should prevail
over the south of the state, although it will be cloudy and cool.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The upper level low is expected to weaken as it continues to move
east-southeast across inland Queensland during Friday. Rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms will extend east with the trough. The next in the series of upper
level troughs will then most likely intensify as it approaches the southwestern
Queensland border on Saturday. This new trough should combine with moist E to NE
winds along the east Queensland coast to generate rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms over eastern Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
