Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Nil.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1033 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the tropical
east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough will approach the southwestern
corner of the state today. A broad swathe of strong winds over the southern
Coral Sea is producing large E'ly swells and powerful surf from Fraser Island to
the New South Wales border.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Cloudy with patchy rain developing over the Channel Country, with some
thunder possible late today and evening. High cloud generally increasing
elsewhere over southern Queensland, though conditions will remain fine and warm.
Isolated showers in the far northern tropics, with possible isolated
thunderstorms about northern Cape York Peninsula and near the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast. Fine elsewhere. Large ocean swells over the southern
Queensland coast producing powerful surf. Moderate to fresh SE winds over the
northeast tropical coast. Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
Patchy rain and showers extending from the northwest of the state into the
southeast interior, with a thunderstorm or two possible near the southern inland
border. Dry and cool southerly winds developing about the southwest. Conditions
should remain mostly fine in the Southeast Coast district, though increasing
instability ahead of the upper level trough may produce isolated showers over
inland parts, and isolated showers are also possible about Fraser Island. Fine
conditions elsewhere apart from isolated showers and the chance of isolated
thunderstorms on the far northern Peninsula coast and near the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast and northwest. The large ocean swells and surf along the
southern Queensland coast will begin to decrease.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough and associated band of patchy rain, showers and
isolated thunderstorms are expected to move east and extend from the northwest
of the state to the southeast coast by evening. Cool, dry southwesterly winds
will extend further east over the interior in the wake of the rain band.
Isolated showers will develop along the northeast tropical and central coasts,
with isolated thunderstorms continuing over Cape York Peninsula. Maximum
temperatures will be well below average over western Queensland.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough will contract off the southeast Queensland coast, however at
the same time, a new upper level trough is expected to intensify near the
northwestern Queensland border. A cloud band and rain areas will therefore
persist through the northwest of the state, with possible isolated thunderstorms
due to increasing instability. Patchy cloud will persist through southern
central Queensland to the Fraser coast, although with only light rain areas or
isolated showers due to limited moisture. Dry and cool southerly winds will
extend through remaining parts of southern Queensland, with maximum temperatures
well below average. Maximum temperatures will also be very cool under the cloud
band in the northwest. A trough off the east tropical coast will move inland,
with isolated showers expected over the eastern tropics and remaining central
districts, increasing to scattered in Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait with
possible isolated thunderstorms.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper low over northwest Queensland will move southeast, into the central
interior during the day, producing a band of rain, showers and isolated
thunderstorms. Instability will also increase along the tropical east coast and
interior in response to the upper system and increasing low level moisture,
leading to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Fine conditions should
prevail over the south of the state, although it will be cloudy and cool.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The upper level low is expected to continue east-southeast across inland
Queensland and move off the east Queensland coast during Friday. Rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms will extend east with the trough. The next in the series
of upper level troughs will then most likely intensify as it approaches the
southwestern Queensland border on Saturday. This new trough should combine with
moist E to NE winds along the east Queensland coast to generate rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms over eastern Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
