MELBOURNE - Apr 17/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1038 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies off the southern Queensland coast. An upper level low lies near the border over northeast New South Wales. Another weak surface trough lies over the central and southeast Queensland interior. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over southeast districts. Mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remaining districts east of about Kowanyama to Charleville, tending scattered about Cape York Peninsula. Fine in the west. Moderate E to SE winds, fresh at times along the east tropical coast. Forecast for Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over southeast districts and the northeast tropics. Generally isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over central districts and the eastern Warrego and Maranoa. Fine in the west. Mostly moderate E to SE winds, fresh at times along the east tropical coast. Forecast for Thursday The strong high over the Tasman Sea will move closer to New Zealand and maintain a moist E to SE wind flow along Queensland's east coast. The upper level low is expected to slip southwards over New South Wales, though it should maintain enough instability to generate isolated showers and thunderstorms over Queensland's southern and central districts, with possibly more widespread activity about the southeast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also occur over the northern tropics, with more isolated activity expected over central districts. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue in the west. Forecast for Friday The upper low is expected to weaken as it continues slipping southwards, though it will extend a new upper trough over the southern interior of Queensland. The strong high near New Zealand will maintain an E to SE wind flow and moist conditions through eastern and northern parts of the state. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the eastern half of the state, as well as over the southern interior and northern tropics. Fine conditions continuing in the far west in a drier wind flow. Forecast for Saturday The strong high near New Zealand will maintain an E to SE wind flow and moist conditions through eastern and northern parts of the state. The upper trough is expected to move over southeast Queensland and continue to produce unstable conditions with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in this region. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are also likely in the moist conditions over the northeast tropics. Isolated showers over the central interior. Fine in the west. Maximum temperatures tending above average in the west and southern interior. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A series of upper troughs will move east over southeastern Australia during the outlook period. This will maintain unstable conditions over much of southern and central Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected. A moist onshore wind flow will maintain showers and more isolated thunderstorms over the tropics. Patchy thundery rain may affect the southwest of the state during Sunday and Monday as the upper troughs move over that region. Maximum temperatures tending near and above average in the west and south. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
