Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 16/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. A broad trough is near stationary over the northwest Coral Sea. An
upper level low lies over the northern New South Wales and extends a trough into
Queensland's southern interior.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Patchy rain, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast
coast and adjacent inland with the chance of some moderate to heavy falls,
mainly about the coast. Mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
remaining eastern districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over
the northern tropics. Fine in the west. Moderate E to SE winds, fresh along the
east tropical coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
A strong high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will drive moderate to
fresh and moist E'ly winds over eastern districts. The upper low will most
likely lie near the southern inland border, maintaining unstable conditions,
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Queensland's southeast.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will also occur over the tropics
north of about Bowen in a moist and unstable airmass. Isolated showers are
expected over remaining areas of the tropics and central districts. Fine
conditions will persist in the west.
Forecast for Thursday
The strong high over the Tasman Sea will move closer to New Zealand and
maintain a moist E to SE wind flow along Queensland's east coast. The upper
level low is expected to slip southwards over New South Wales, though it should
maintain enough instability to generate isolated showers and thunderstorms over
Queensland's southern and central districts, with some more widespread activity
about the southeast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also occur over
the northern tropics, with more isolated activity expected over central
districts. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue in the west.
Forecast for Friday
The upper low is expected to weaken as it continues slipping southwards,
though it should continue to extend an upper trough into the interior of
Queensland. The strong high near New Zealand will maintain an E to SE wind flow
and moist conditions through eastern and northern parts of the state. Showers
and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the eastern half of the state, and
also over the far northern tropics. Fine conditions continuing in the far west
in a drier wind flow.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A series of upper troughs will move east over southeastern Australia during
the outlook period. This will maintain unstable conditions over much of southern
and central Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected. A moist onshore
wind flow will maintain showers over the tropics, with possible isolated
thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
