MELBOURNE - Apr 16/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

to Cardwell has been cancelled.
A Flood Warning is current for the Diamantina and Thomson Rivers and the Cooper
Creek.

Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. A broad trough is near stationary over the northwest Coral Sea. An
upper trough is intensifying as it moves east over the interior of the state and
will enter southeastern districts late tonight. An upper low will most likely
form over northern New South Wales on Tuesday.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Maranoa and southern Darling
Downs and Granite Belt districts, increasing to rain areas and thunderstorms
during the afternoon and evening with some moderate falls. Showers increasing on
the southeast coast, with possible afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
Scattered showers over the Central Coast and Capricornia districts. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics, increasing to
thundery rain areas with moderate falls on the eastern Peninsula coast. Isolated
showers elsewhere over the east coast and through the eastern interior.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Warrego. Fine elsewhere.
Moderate E to SE winds, fresh along the east tropical coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
Patchy rain, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast
coast and adjacent inland with moderate falls. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms elsewhere southeast of about Gladstone to Charleville, increasing
to scattered in the afternoon. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over
the northern tropics. Isolated showers elsewhere along the east coast and
through the eastern interior. Fine in the west. Moderate E to SE winds, fresh
along the east tropical coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
A strong high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will drive moderate to
fresh and moist E'ly winds over eastern districts. The upper low will most
likely lie near the southern inland border of Queensland, generating unstable
conditions over southern districts east of Charleville and through the
Capricornia with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms expected.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will also occur over the tropics
north of about Townsville in a moist and unstable airmass. Isolated showers are
expected over remaining areas of the tropics and central districts. Fine
conditions will persist in the west.
Forecast for Thursday
The strong high over the Tasman Sea will move closer to New Zealand and
maintain a moist E to SE wind flow along the east coast. The upper level low
will most likely move south further into New South Wales, but maintain enough
instability to generate isolated showers and thunderstorms over southern and
central districts east of about Longreach, more scattered along the southeast
coast and adjacent inland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also occur
over the tropics, with more isolated activity expected over central districts.
Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue in the west.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The upper level low is expected to weaken as it continues slipping south
towards Victoria. However, it will be followed by a series of upper troughs
moving east over southeastern Australia. This will maintain unstable conditions
over much of southern and central Queensland with showers and thunderstorms
expected. A moist onshore wind flow will maintain showers over the tropics, with
possible isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
