Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 15/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Cape
Grenville to Cardwell.
A Flood Warning is current for the Diamantina and Thomson Rivers and the Cooper
Creek.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1030 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east
coast of Queensland. A broad trough is near stationary well off the North
Tropical Coast. An upper trough lies over central Australia and is expected to
strengthen as it moves eastwards over the southern interior early in the new
week.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Mainly isolated showers along the east coast, more widespread about the
southeast, and tending to rain areas about the northeast coast. Some moderate
are possible along the coast north of about Cairns. Isolated thunderstorms over
the Peninsula district. Isolated showers over the southern interior. Moderate
SE to E winds, fresh at times along the tropical east coast.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough should strengthen over the southeast interior, causing
instability to increase over the region and leading to scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the southeast districts. A strengthening high
pressure system in the Tasman Sea should push isolated to scattered showers over
the remaining eastern districts and the Central Highlands. Showers should be
more widespread, and tend to areas of rain about the state's far north as the
tropical trough gradually approaches the northeast coast. Fine and mostly sunny
over the western districts.
Forecast for Tuesday
An upper level low may form within the upper trough over the southeast
interior, maintaining the scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
southeast districts, tending to areas of patchy rain. Some moderate falls are
possible in the region, particularly near the southeast coast. Scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms over southern interior and over the far northern
tropics, tending to rain at times about the wet tropics. Scattered showers along
the remaining east coast, more isolated over the remainder of the eastern
interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
A strong high pressure system should remain over the Tasman Sea, and continue
to push moist easterly winds over the eastern districts, leading to mainly
scattered showers about the east coast and nearby inland areas, and more
isolated showers over the remainder of the eastern, central and southern
interior. The upper level low may contract away into the northern interior of
New South Wales, but it should still produce enough instability to generate
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Queensland's southern interior
and southeast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the far
northern tropics, and fine and mostly sunny over the state's west.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level low may weaken a little over northern New South Wales, but
enough moisture and instability should still be present over Queensland's
southeast to produce scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. A strong
high near New Zealand should maintain a flow of moist air and showers over the
eastern half of Queensland, with more widespread showers about the east coast,
especially the southeast and northeast coasts. Isolated thunderstorms are also
possible over the Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny over the western
districts.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The upper level low is expected to weaken into a trough and then slip
southwards over New South Wales late in the week, however the high near New
Zealand should maintain an onshore flow and showers and storms over the eastern
and central districts. These showers should be more widespread about the coast
and over the far northern tropics. At least isolated thunderstorms are also
possible over the weekend over the central and southern interior as an upper
trough strengthens over Central Australia. The showers and storms may become
more active over the southern and central interior during Sunday as a surface
trough works with the upper trough.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
