Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 14/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from
Torres Strait to Bowen.
A Flood Warning is current for the Diamantina and Thomson Rivers and Cooper
Creek.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A large high [1029 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the
east coast of Queensland. The high will move east towards New Zealand over the
weekend. A trough lies over the northwestern Coral Sea and will move west over
Cape York Peninsula over the weekend. An upper trough lies over central
Australia and is expected to move east over the southwestern Queensland border
during today.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Isolated to scattered showers along the east tropical coast, increasing to
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms north of about Cardwell during the
afternoon and evening with some moderate to heavy falls developing. Isolated
showers developing over remaining parts of the Peninsula district, with isolated
afternoon thunderstorms. Scattered showers and drizzle areas over the southeast
coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers over the remaining east coast,
extending into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Cloudy over western
Queensland though with little or no rain. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh E to
SE winds, tending strong SE'ly along the coast north of about Bowen.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will extend from southwestern Queensland into southeastern
Australia and will move slowly east while amplifying during the day. Instability
will increase over southern districts ahead of the upper trough. Isolated
showers will develop over the southern interior, with cloudy conditions and more
scattered shower activity and drizzle about the southeast coast and adjacent
inland. Rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms with moderate to heavy
falls should continue to affect the northeast tropics due to the trough over the
Coral Sea moving on to the coast. Isolated showers will continue elsewhere about
the east coast and through the eastern interior.
Forecast for Monday
The upper level trough will continue to amplify over southeast Queensland.
Instability will therefore increase further over southern Queensland, with
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms expected south and east of about
Blackall. A cloud band will most likely thicken during the afternoon and evening
over the southeast corner of the state with rain areas developing and some
moderate falls expected. Isolated showers will also increase to scattered over
the central coast with possible isolated afternoon thunderstorms. The trough
over the northern tropics should shift west through the northern Gulf of
Carpentaria, with rain areas and moderate to heavy falls gradually contracting
north into the Peninsula district. Isolated showers will occur over remaining
parts of the east coast, also developing through the southern tropical and
central interior in the afternoon.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough should develop further, most likely becoming a slow-moving
upper low over the southeastern interior of the state. Rain areas, scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue over the southeastern corner
with some moderate falls, possibly locally heavy with thunderstorms. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur over southern central districts
and the Maranoa. Shower and thunderstorm activity will continue over the far
northern tropics, with rain areas persisting over far northern Cape York
Peninsula and Torres Strait. Scattered showers will occur along the remaining
east coast, with isolated showers extending into the eastern interior.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper low will most likely slip slowly south into northern New South
Wales during the outlook period. Rain areas will therefore contract south out of
southern Queensland, though showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue due
to some remnant instability associated with the slow moving upper low. Isolated
to scattered showers will continue over remaining eastern districts, more
widespread with isolated thunderstorms in the far northern tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
