Weather Situation
A large high [1032 hPa] over Victoria extends a firm ridge along the east
coast of Queensland. The high will move east into the Tasman Sea on Friday. An
upper level low lies over northwest Australia and will weaken and move southeast
over central Australia on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated to scattered showers along the east coast and the adjacent inland,
increasing to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls about the
North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers over the northern tropical interior and
along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. High cloud increasing over the west of the
state though with little or no rain. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along
the east coast. Moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during
the morning.
Forecast for Friday
Scattered showers along the east tropical coast, increasing to rain at times
between about Cooktown and Ingham during the morning with some moderate falls.
Isolated to scattered showers elsewhere along the east coast, extending into the
adjacent inland during the afternoon. Isolated showers over the northern
tropical interior and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast with possible isolated
thunderstorms near Mornington Island. High cloud extending through the west
though with only patchy light rain and possible thunder, mostly near the western
border. Fine conditions elsewhere over the state. Strong and gusty SE winds
along the east coast, decreasing below strong south of Gladstone in the evening.
Moderate SE to NE winds over the interior, fresh at times during the day.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will move east into the central Tasman Sea and will maintain the
ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A trough over the northern Coral Sea
will move west towards the Peninsula coast, combining with the ridge to maintain
fresh to strong SE'ly winds over east tropical coast waters. Isolated showers
will continue along the east coast and spread into the adjacent inland in the
afternoon. These showers will continue to be scattered about the north tropical
coast, with rain areas and possible thunderstorms developing along the Peninsula
coast as the trough in the Coral Sea approaches. The upper low will weaken into
an upper trough and approach the southwest of the state, generating some high
cloud and patchy light rain over the southern interior. Fine conditions will
continue elsewhere over the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will extend from southwestern Queensland into southeastern
Australia and will most likely move slowly east while amplifying during the day.
Instability will increase over southeastern districts ahead of the upper trough,
with showers becoming more scattered near the southern coast and spreading a
little further inland in the afternoon. Cloud will increase further over the
northeast tropics due to the trough over the Coral Sea moving on to the coast,
with rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms most likely affecting areas
north of about Ingham. Isolated showers will continue elsewhere about the east
coast and through the eastern interior. Fine conditions will occur
elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the upper level trough but at
this stage it will most likely continue amplifying over the state, extending
from the northwest into the southeast interior. Instability will therefore
increase further through southern Queensland, with scattered showers and
possible thunderstorms expected over the southeast and more isolated afternoon
activity likely through the southern interior. The trough over the northern
tropics should shift west through the northern Gulf of Carpentaria, with rain
areas gradually contracting north into the Peninsula district. Scattered showers
will occur over remaining parts of the east coast, with isolated afternoon
showers through the tropical and central interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The upper trough will most likely continue amplifying as it moves into
eastern Queensland on Tuesday and will move off the east coast into the Coral
Sea during Wednesday or early Thursday. Showers will increase further over
eastern districts as the upper trough approaches with isolated thunderstorms
likely. Showers should then decrease and become confined to the exposed coast
and far northeast tropics following the trough passage. Mostly fine conditions
will occur over the interior, with only isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms east of about Longreach on Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
