MELBOURNE - Apr 11/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Lockhart River to Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high [1035 hPa] over Victoria extended a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level low is located over north-west Australia. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated to scattered showers along the east coast and the adjacent inland, increasing to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers over the northern tropical interior and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast with possible isolated thunderstorms near Mornington Island mainly during the morning. High cloud increasing over the west of the state though with little or no rain. Cool temperatures over much of the state, particularly during the early morning over the southern interior. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along the east coast. Moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during the morning. Forecast for Friday The high will move into the Tasman Sea and will continue to maintain a firm ridge and strong SE'ly winds along much of the east coast of Queensland. Winds will decrease below strong over waters south of about St Lawrence during the day as the high centre shifts east. Isolated showers will continue along most of the east coast and will spread into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. These showers will remain scattered and tend to rain at times during the morning about the North Tropical Coast. The upper low will move into Central Australia and will spread middle level cloud further eastwards across the south-west. Little or no rain will occur with the cloud near the western border. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere over the state. Forecast for Saturday The high will into the central Tasman Sea and will maintain the ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A trough over the northern Coral Sea will move westwards towards the Peninsula coast. This trough in conjunction with the ridge will maintain fresh to strong SE'ly winds over east tropical coast waters. Isolated showers will continue along the east coast and again spread into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. These showers will continue to be scattered about the north tropical coast, with rain areas and possible thunderstorms developing along the Peninsula coast as the trough in the Coral Sea approaches. The upper low will decay into an upper trough and this system will move over the south-west and southern interior of the state, generating some high cloud and patchy light rain with its passage. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere over the state. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough near the Queensland and New South Wales border area will move slowly eastwards and will begin to amplify again later in the day over south-east Queensland. As a result instability will increase over southeastern districts ahead of the upper trough, with showers possibly becoming more scattered near the southern coast and beginning to spread a little further inland in the afternoon. Isolated showers will continue elsewhere about the east coast and through the eastern interior, increasing to scattered on the north tropical coast. Rain areas and isolated storms will occur over Cape York Peninsula and about the north tropical coast as far south as Cairns. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere over the state. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The upper trough in the south will continue to amplify and will further increase the instability over the south-east. So showers will continue to be enhanced near the southern coast and will spread well inland to the eastern parts of the southern interior. May even see a storm develop in the area. The high near Victoria will move into the Tasman Sea on Tuesday and will strengthen the ridge along the east coast during Tuesday and Wednesday. So the moderate to fresh SE winds will continue along the east coast and may become strong again along the coast south of about Fraser Island during Wednesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday. Weather & Warnings Australia New South Wales Victoria Queensland Warnings Summary Forecasts Brisbane Forecast Qld.
