Weather Situation
A high [1037 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight extends a
strengthening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level low is
located over northwest Australia.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers on the northeast tropical coast, increasing to rain at
times with moderate falls developing. Isolated scattered showers along the
remaining east coast and in the far northwest. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere.
Strong and gusty S to SE winds along the east coast south of Townsville,
extending to coastal waters south of Cairns this evening. Moderate to fresh E to
SE winds over the remainder.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated to scattered showers along the east coast and adjacent inland,
increasing to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls about the
North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers over the tropical interior and along the
Gulf of Carpentaria coast with possible isolated thunderstorms near Mornington
Island. Cloud increasing over the northwest though with little or no rain. Cool
temperatures over much of the state, particularly during the early morning over
the southern interior. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along the east coast.
Moderate E to SE winds over the interior, fresh at times during the morning.
Forecast for Friday
The high will move into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge and strong
SE'ly winds along much of the east Queensland coast. Winds will decrease below
strong over waters south of Gladstone during the day as the high centre shifts
east. Isolated showers will continue along most of the east coast and will
spread into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. These showers will remain
scattered and tend to rain at times during the morning about the North Tropical
Coast. The upper low will move into Central Australia and may extend some middle
level cloud and patchy light thundery rain over the far west and southwest of
the state. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will move close to New Zealand but will maintain the ridge along the
east coast of Queensland. A trough over the northern Coral Sea will move west
towards the Peninsula coast, combining with the ridge to maintain fresh to
strong SE'ly winds over east tropical coastal waters. Isolated showers will
continue along the east coast and again spread into the adjacent inland in the
afternoon. These showers will continue to be scattered about the north tropical
coast, with possible thunderstorms developing along the Peninsula coast as the
trough in the Coral Sea approaches. The decaying upper trough will move over the
southern interior of the state, generating some high cloud and patchy light rain
with its passage. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
A new upper trough will move east over southeastern Australia and extend into
the southern interior of Queensland. Instability will increase over southeastern
districts ahead of the upper trough, with showers possibly becoming more
scattered near the southern coast. Isolated showers will continue elsewhere
about the east coast and through the eastern interior, increasing to scattered
on the north tropical coast with possible thunderstorms due to the trough over
the Coral Sea moving further west towards the coast. Fine conditions will occur
elsewhere.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The new upper trough will move east into southeast districts and off the
southeast coast most likely by Monday evening. Showers will continue to be
enhanced near the southern coast due to the passage of the upper trough and also
another trough that will move north along the New South Wales coast on Tuesday.
Isolated showers will extend into the southeast interior in the afternoon. Over
remaining eastern districts stream showers will continue, more frequent on the
North Tropical coast. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere over the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
