MELBOURNE - Mar 29/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Bowen and Burnett Heads. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high near New Zealand extends a firm ridge along much of the east Queensland coast, and dry and stable air over the interior. A broad area of low pressure lies over the Solomon Sea, and a weak surface trough lies well off the southeast coast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Fine over most of the state except for some mainly isolated showers along the east Queensland coast and nearby inland areas, and some scattered showers through far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Moderate to fresh SE winds, gusty at times along the east coast. Forecast for Friday The weak surface trough will move closer to the southeast coast, and will combine with the ridge to produce fresh to strong S to SE winds along the east coast of Queensland. Remaining fine over most of the state except for some mainly isolated showers about the east coast and far north, more widespread over the southeast due to the passage of a weak upper trough. Temperatures remaining at or below the monthly average over most of the state. Forecast for Saturday The ridge should weaken along the east coast of Queensland, but should work with the large low or possible tropical cyclone over the Solomon Sea to maintain a dry southerly airflow across most of Queensland. Should a tropical cyclone form in the Solomon Sea it is not expected to approach Queensland. The dry air over Queensland should maintain fine conditions over most of the state, except for some isolated showers along parts of the central and south coasts. Scattered showers are possible over the northern Peninsula. Temperatures remaining below the seasonal average, particularly in the morning. Forecast for Sunday A weak ridge along the southeast coast of Queensland, and the dry air over the interior, will maintain fine conditions over most of the state, except for some isolated showers about the east coast and over the far northern parts of Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait islands. Temperatures remaining below the seasonal average, particularly in the morning. Forecast for Monday The ridge along the east coast should weaken early in the new week, but a low to mid level high over central Australia should remain the dry and fine conditions over most of Queensland. Just some isolated showers over the North Tropical Coast and the Peninsula district. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A low to mid level high should remain over Central Australia, maintaining the fine conditions over most of the state, except for just a few isolated showers about the east coast and Peninsula district. Fine and cool conditions will continue over the interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
