Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 26/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Cape Melville and Burnett Heads.
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams.

Weather Situation
A trough extends from Coral Sea to the north tropical coast. The trough is
expected to contract northwards over the next couple of days. A high over the
Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along much of the east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms with some moderate to locally heavy
falls on the northeast tropical coast, easing to scattered showers from the
south. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the northern tropics.
Isolated showers along remaining parts of the east coast. Isolated showers over
parts of the central and southern interior. Fine and cool in the far west. Light
and variable winds over the far north tropical coast. Fresh to strong SE winds
along remaining parts of the east coast. Moderate SE to NE winds over the
interior, fresh at times.
Forecast for Tuesday
Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls contracting
north from the North Tropical Coast into the northern Peninsula district.
Isolated to scattered showers will occur elsewhere over the northern tropics and
along the east coast. Fine inland. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds over most of
the state, strong at times along the east coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move further east over the Tasman Sea, while the trough on the
Peninsula coast will contract further north and weaken. Fresh to strong SE winds
and isolated to scattered showers will continue along the east coast and through
the eastern interior in the moist onshore wind flow south of the trough. Showers
will be more widespread with some storms through far northern Cape York
Peninsula and Torres Strait near the trough. Fine conditions will occur over
western districts and the southern interior under the stabilising influence of a
ridge.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will drift to the east of New Zealand. A low over the northeastern
Coral Sea [well offshore of the Queensland coast] will combine with the high to
produce a fresh to strong S to SE wind flow along the east Queensland coast.
This southerly flow will drive relatively dry air well into the tropics, leading
to generally settled weather. Isolated showers will occur along the east coast
and adjacent inland, increasing to scattered with possible isolated
thunderstorms through far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine
conditions will occur over the interior, with temperatures remaining generally
below the monthly average.
Forecast for Friday
The combination of a ridge along the east coast, and a low over eastern Coral
Sea will maintain fresh to strong S to SE winds along the east coast of
Queensland, with isolated showers, tending more scattered in the south with the
assistance of an upper trough. The low may deepen, and possibly develop into a
tropical cyclone, but will have no direct influence on Queensland. Remaining
fine further inland.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high will remain to the east of New Zealand as a new high enters the
Tasman Sea. The low or tropical cyclone over the Coral Sea will remain well
offshore of the Queensland coast. S to SE winds should gradually decrease along
the north tropical coast during the outlook period though remain fresh to strong
along central and southern coasts. Isolated showers will occur along the east
coast, more widespread through far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres
Strait with possible isolated thunderstorms. Fine and cool conditions will
continue over the interior.
