Weather Situation
A tropical low is located over the Central Highlands, and is expected to
weaken as it passes over the southeast on Friday. This tropical low extends the
monsoon trough across the southern Queensland coast. A separate trough is
located near the southern Queensland coast where a low is likely to develop
overnight before moving east during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle periods over the southern interior and
central west. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about central districts. Areas
of rain over southeast districts, with some moderate to heavy falls possible
near the coast in the evening. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over
Cape York Peninsula and isolated showers over the remainder of the state's
northeast. Fine over the far west. Moderate to fresh and gusty NW to NE winds
over eastern districts. Fresh SE to NE winds over the southeast, strong and
gusty about the coast and islands. Moderate to fresh SE to SW over the west and
southern interior. Temperatures well below average over the interior.
Forecast for Friday
The coastal surface trough and low may produce some early moderate to heavy
rain near the southeast coast, before moving offshore during the day. The other,
inland low is expected to dissipate into a low level trough as it passes over
the southeast of the state. Cloud and rain areas over the southeast are expected
to contract offshore, leaving showers in the region. A high entering the Great
Australian Bight should push dry air over western Queensland, leading to fine
conditions over the interior apart from some lingering drizzle and showers about
the central and southern interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are
expected over Cape York Peninsula, and some isolated showers over the remainder
of the state's northeast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are
possible over the Central Highlands and the east coast between Bowen and the
Sunshine Coast. Temperatures well below average over the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The high over the Great Australian Bight will continue to feed drier and more
stable air into most of Queensland, leading to fine conditions over a lot of the
state except for showers about the east coast and the nearby inland areas, and
into the northern Goldfields. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York
Peninsula. Temperatures well below average over the interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to move into southeast Australia and strengthen the
ridge along the east Queensland coast, maintaining showers about the east coast
and eastern interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over Cape
York Peninsula. Fine over the west and southern interior. Temperatures well
below average over the interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high is expected to slowly drift east over the Tasman Sea and maintain a
firm ridge with fresh SE winds along most of the east Queensland coast with
showers, spreading further west into the central and southern interior on Monday
as a new upper trough moves over southern Queensland. Remaining fine over
western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms persisting over the far northern
tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
