MELBOURNE - Mar 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for parts of the Southeast Coast district. A Strong Winds Warning is now current for coastal waters from Double Island Point to Point Danger, including Moreton Bay. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A tropical low is located over the Central Highlands, and is expected to weaken as it passes over the southeast on Friday. This tropical low extends the monsoon trough across the southern Queensland coast. A separate trough is located near the southern Queensland coast where a low is likely to develop overnight before moving east during Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle periods over the southern interior and central west. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about central districts. Areas of rain over southeast districts, with some moderate to heavy falls possible near the coast in the evening. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and isolated showers over the remainder of the state's northeast. Fine over the far west. Moderate to fresh and gusty NW to NE winds over eastern districts. Fresh SE to NE winds over the southeast, strong and gusty about the coast and islands. Moderate to fresh SE to SW over the west and southern interior. Temperatures well below average over the interior. Forecast for Friday The coastal surface trough and low may produce some early moderate to heavy rain near the southeast coast, before moving offshore during the day. The other, inland low is expected to dissipate into a low level trough as it passes over the southeast of the state. Cloud and rain areas over the southeast are expected to contract offshore, leaving showers in the region. A high entering the Great Australian Bight should push dry air over western Queensland, leading to fine conditions over the interior apart from some lingering drizzle and showers about the central and southern interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over Cape York Peninsula, and some isolated showers over the remainder of the state's northeast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible over the Central Highlands and the east coast between Bowen and the Sunshine Coast. Temperatures well below average over the interior. Forecast for Saturday The high over the Great Australian Bight will continue to feed drier and more stable air into most of Queensland, leading to fine conditions over a lot of the state except for showers about the east coast and the nearby inland areas, and into the northern Goldfields. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures well below average over the interior. Forecast for Sunday The high is expected to move into southeast Australia and strengthen the ridge along the east Queensland coast, maintaining showers about the east coast and eastern interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over Cape York Peninsula. Fine over the west and southern interior. Temperatures well below average over the interior. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high is expected to slowly drift east over the Tasman Sea and maintain a firm ridge with fresh SE winds along most of the east Queensland coast with showers, spreading further west into the central and southern interior on Monday as a new upper trough moves over southern Queensland. Remaining fine over western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms persisting over the far northern tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
