Weather Situation
A tropical low is located east of about Longreach, and extends an active
monsoon trough across to the Capricornia coast. The low is expected to move
east-southeast over the next 24 hours while weakening. The trough is expected to
move slowly southwards towards the southern coast during the next day or so,
with a low expected to develop near or off the Fraser Island or Sunshine Coast
region late Thursday. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the
southern Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Squally showers and thunderstorms over the northern and eastern tropics.
Cloudy elsewhere with scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms
over districts south and east of about Longreach with moderate to heavy falls.
Fine over the far west of the state. Fresh and gusty NW to NE winds over the
eastern tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds over the southeast, shifting
SE to SW over the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
Cloudy with scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over
central and southeast districts and the southern interior with moderate to heavy
falls; breaking to lighter rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over central
districts and the southern tropics during the day. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Fine over the far west.
Moderate to fresh and gusty NW to NE winds over eastern districts, shifting SE
to NE over the southeast. Moderate to fresh SE to SW over the west and southern
interior.
Forecast for Friday
The low is expected to have dissipated into a low level trough over the
southeast of the state, while another low off the southeast Queensland coast
will move offshore during the day. As a result, the cloud and rain areas over
the southeast are expected to contract offshore, leaving showers in the region.
A high entering the Great Australian Bight should push dry air over western
Queensland, leading to fine conditions over the interior apart from some
lingering showers about the central and southern interior. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms are expected over Cape York Peninsula, while unstable conditions
will persist over the eastern tropics with scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms.
Forecast for Saturday
The high over the Great Australian Bight will continue to feed drier and more
stable air into most of Queensland, leading to fine conditions over a lot of the
state except for showers about the east coast and adjacent inland, with
scattered showers and thunderstorms persisting over the far north.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to move into southeast Australia and strengthen the
ridge along the east Queensland coast. This will result in showers about the
east coast and eastern interior, particularly in the tropics. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms are expected over the far northeast tropics. Fine over the
west and southern interior. The next upper trough is expected to approach
southwest Queensland late in the day.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high is expected to slowly drift east over the Tasman Sea and maintain a
firm ridge with fresh SE winds along most of the east Queensland coast with
showers, spreading further west into the central and southern interior on Monday
as the upper trough moves over southern Queensland. Remaining fine over western
Queensland. A weak monsoonal flow will persist over far northern Queensland with
showers and thunderstorms persisting over the far northern tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
