MELBOURNE - Mar 21/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning for the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Southeast Coast and parts of the Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Channel Country districts. A Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters from St Lawrence to Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A tropical low is located east of Winton, and extends an active monsoon trough across to the east coast near Bowen. The low and trough are expected to move slowly southwards during the next few days. A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the southern and central coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Squally showers and thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain areas gradually contracting into the southern tropics and towards the southern interior. Patchy rain areas developing over the southern interior. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the far north. Scattered showers over the southeast. Fine over the far west of the state. Fresh and gusty NW to NE winds over the eastern tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds over the southeast, shifting SW to SW over the remainder of the state. Forecast for Thursday The tropical low should move to the southeast through central Queensland, contracting the moderate to heavy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms out of the southern tropics, although some cloudiness and light rain or drizzle is likely to remain. Rain areas and a few thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls will extend into the southeast districts and the southern interior. Fine over the far west, isolated showers over the tropics, while scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should continue over the far north in the monsoon flow. Forecast for Friday The low is expected to dissipate into a low level trough about the southeast parts of the state, causing the rain areas to ease about the southeast and to contract offshore. A high over the Great Australian Bight should push dry air over western Queensland, leading to fine conditions over a lot of the interior except for some mainly light showers about the central interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over Cape York Peninsula, while more isolated showers and thunderstorms should occur over the northeast and central coast districts. Forecast for Saturday The high over the Great Australian Bight will continue to feed dryer and more stable air into most of Queensland, leading to fine conditions over a lot of the state except for some isolated showers about the east coast and some scattered showers and storms over the far north. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A high over southern Australia will maintain mainly dry and fine conditions over a lot of the state, except for showers about the east coast and the chance of some scattered showers and isolated storms over the Peninsula district, although the passage of an upper level trough may lead to showers spreading further inland to the eastern half of the state on Monday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday. Weather & Warnings Australia New South Wales Victoria Queensland Warnings Summary Forecasts Brisbane Forecast Qld.
