MELBOURNE - Mar 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea is strengthening as it moves east towards New Zealand. The high extends a firm ridge along the Queensland east coast. The monsoon trough extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria across the Top End of the Northern Territory. An upper level trough is expected to move eastwards over Queensland's southern interior today. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about most central and southeast districts. Mainly fine with just some isolated showers and thunderstorms over the central and southern interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, spreading to areas of rain with moderate to locally heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast and the Central Coast. Fine over the far southwest. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Thursday The high should remain near New Zealand, maintaining the ridge along the Queensland east coast. An onshore flow associated with the ridge should produce scattered showers and local thunder about the southern and central coasts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over most of the Queensland interior due to continuing instability from a weak upper trough, though conditions should remain fine over the far southwest. The monsoon trough is likely to gradually strengthen over the Gulf of Carpentaria, resulting in increasing rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics, and some moderate to locally heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast. Forecast for Friday The high should start weakening near New Zealand, and causing the onshore winds over the southeast coast of Queensland to weaken and the showers to become more isolated. The next surface and accompanying upper level trough is expected to enter southwest Queensland, and will assist in producing showers and thunderstorms over western Queensland and the southern interior. The monsoon trough is likely to strengthen over the Gulf of Carpentaria and central Cape York Peninsula, resulting in further widespread shower, rain and thunderstorm activity over the northern tropics and the northwest of the state, with moderate to heavy falls possible. Fine over the southeast and central interior. Forecast for Saturday A new high is expected to drift over southeast Australia, resulting in mainly fine conditions about the Southeast and the Capricornia coasts, except for some isolated showers. Another upper level trough is expected to move over southern Queensland, generating some isolated showers and storms. The monsoon trough should strengthen as it drifts southwards across Queensland, resulting in showers, thunderstorms and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls across northern, central and western districts. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The new high is expected to extend a ridge into southeast Queensland, resulting in some showers about the southeast and central coast Queensland coast. The monsoon trough is likely to remain active over northern Queensland with further widespread showers, thunderstorms and rain areas. An upper level trough over the southeast may produce some isolated storms about the southern interior. Day time temperatures below average in the tropics and northwest due to the thick cloud. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday. Weather & WarningsAustraliaNew South WalesVictoriaQueenslandWarnings SummaryForecastsBrisbane ForecastQld.
