MELBOURNE - Mar 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea is moving east towards New Zealand and strengthening, and extends a firm ridge along the Queensland east coast. The monsoon trough lies north of the Northern Territory coastline. An upper level trough is moving into western Queensland tonight, and expected to move over central and southern Queensland on Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers over southeast and central districts, more widespread with isolated thunderstorms about the Central Coast and Whitsundays. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics, with areas of rain and moderate falls about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the west and southwest. Moderate to fresh and gusty E to SE winds along the east coast. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Wednesday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about most central and southeast districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the central and southern interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, with areas of rain and moderate falls about the North Tropical Coast. Fine over the far southwest. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Thursday The high should remain near New Zealand, maintaining the ridge along the Queensland east coast. An onshore flow associated with the ridge should produce scattered showers and local thunder about most of Queensland's southern and central coasts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over most of the Queensland interior due to continuing instability from a weak upper trough, though conditions should remain fine over the far southwest. The monsoon trough is likely to develop over the Gulf of Carpentaria and central Cape York Peninsula, producing further scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics, and areas of increasing rain about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and the North Tropical Coast. Forecast for Friday The high should remain near New Zealand, maintaining a weakening ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast and more isolated showers. The next surface and accompanying upper level trough is expected to enter southwest Queensland, and will assist in producing showers and thunderstorms over western Queensland and the southern interior. The monsoon trough is likely to strengthen over the Gulf of Carpentaria and central Cape York Peninsula as a low moves over the Top End of the Northern Territory. This is expected to lead to more widespread shower, rain and thunderstorm activity over the northern tropics and the northwest of the state with moderate to heavy falls possible. Fine over the southeast and central interior. Forecast for Saturday A new high is expected to drift over southeast Australia, which should allow isolated showers to continue over Queensland's southern and Capricornia coast. Another upper level trough is expected to move over southern Queensland, accompanied by isolated showers and thunderstorms that may extend across to the southeast during the day. Showers, thunderstorms and rain areas are likely to spread a little further south over the northwest of the state and the tropics with moderate to heavy falls likely as the monsoon trough continues to strengthen over northern Queensland; though the exact focus of strongest winds and heavy rainfall will depend on the movement and intensity of the low from the Northern Territory. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The new high is expected to strengthen near and to the south of Tasmania and extend a ridge over New South Wales and southeast Queensland with increasing S to SE winds and some showers along the southern to central Queensland coast. The monsoon trough is likely to remain active over northern Queensland with further widespread showers, thunderstorms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls over the northwest and tropics. Day time temperatures below average in the tropics and northwest due to the thick cloud. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
