Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 11/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and
streams.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high along Australia's southern coast extends a strengthening ridge along
Queensland's east coast, maintaining the mainly dry conditions over the southern
half of the state. A weak upper trough will move off the east coast late today.
Deep moisture and instability remain in place over the northern tropics.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated to scattered showers along the southeast and central coasts, with
isolated showers extending into the eastern inland during the day. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms north of about Camooweal to Cardwell. Fine conditions
in the west. Moderate SE to E winds, fresh at times about the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high should drift towards New Zealand while maintaining a ridge along the
east coast of Queensland, producing at least isolated showers about the eastern
districts, more widespread about the northeast coast. Showers and thunderstorms
should persist over the remainder of the northern tropics. A new upper trough
developing into western Queensland will provide enough instability for a few
afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the far west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should slip to the east of New Zealand, but is likely to maintain a
weak ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The upper trough will move
further east and lead to an increase in shower activity along the east coast and
adjacent inland in the onshore flow. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over
the far north, spreading to most of the tropical interior during the day with
the assistance of the upper trough. Fine conditions should return to the
southwest.
Forecast for Thursday
The high should remain near New Zealand, maintaining a weak ridge along
Queensland's east coast. The onshore flow should produce at least isolated
showers about the eastern districts, more widespread over the state's southeast
with the assistance of the weak upper trough. The monsoon trough is likely to
develop over the Gulf of Carpentaria and central Cape York Peninsula, producing
scattered showers and thunderstorms over the far north. Mainly isolated showers
and storms over most of the interior.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high should remain near New Zealand at the end of the week, maintaining
at least isolated shower activity over the eastern districts. Showers and
thunderstorms continuing over the northern tropics. A strengthening monsoonal
flow is likely to lead to an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity with
developing rain areas about the northwest and far north of the state. At this
early stage the exact focus of strongest winds and heavy rainfall is unclear.
Meanwhile in the south, a low is likely to develop in the deepening Coral Sea
trough, but this system is likely to remain well offshore and have minimal
impact, apart from maintaining fresh winds along the southern Queensland coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
