Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 1/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and
streams.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high over the Coral Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east Queensland
coast. A surface trough extends from the Northern Territory to the New South
Wales coast and lies through far southwest Queensland. Another trough lies over
the eastern Coral Sea and is likely to move west, approaching the central coast
of Queensland over the weekend.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
A cloud band with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with
moderate to heavy falls will persist over the Channel Country. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms through the tropics north of about Bowen and through
northwestern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected over the remaining east
coast north of about Gladstone and will develop about the southern border ranges
late in the day. Fine and very warm elsewhere. Mostly moderate NE to NW
winds.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough in the southwest will remain slow-moving, producing
scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls
over the Channel Country. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue in
the northwest. A high over the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge over the southeast
of the state maintaining mostly fine conditions, although isolated showers will
continue about the southern border ranges near a decaying southerly change. The
Coral Sea trough will move westwards towards the central coast, enhancing shower
and thunderstorm activity along the coast and adjacent inland between about
Bowen and Gladstone, with more isolated showers extending southwards to the
Sunshine Coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur elsewhere through
the tropics. Fine conditions are expected over the remainder.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough over the far southwest will remain slow moving but should weaken
with rainfall amounts in the Channel Country easing significantly. The Coral Sea
trough should move onshore near the central coast during the day with scattered
showers and thunderstorms about the east coast between Bowen and the Sunshine
Coast, extending inland into the Central Highlands and Coalfields district.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely over most of the interior and
tropics. Isolated showers about the Southeast Coast and Darling Downs and
Granite Belt districts.
Forecast for Monday
An upper level trough will move northeast through New South Wales and should
approach the Queensland border late in the day. An associated surface trough
should move eastwards across the southern interior. These systems combined with
a moist unstable airmass will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms, while
more isolated shower and thunderstorm activity is likely over the west of the
state and the tropics. Scattered showers should affect the southeast coast.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The surface trough extending through southern Queensland will most likely
move further north and east, with the coastal section arriving into southeast
Queensland as a southeasterly wind change, most likely on Tuesday. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms are expected over southern Queensland with more
widespread activity near the surface trough. A deep, moist easterly wind flow
with showers and thunderstorms should persist into much of northeastern and
central Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
