MELBOURNE - Feb 29/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Coral Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough extends from central Australia to the far southern New South Wales coast and lies through far southwest Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and far western districts with some rain areas and moderate to heavy falls over the Channel Country. Isolated showers near the east coast between Bowen to about Gladstone. Fine and very warm conditions are expected elsewhere. Mostly moderate NE to NW winds, fresh at times over the far southwest. Forecast for Friday The surface trough over the southwest of the state will remain slow-moving, and will maintain a cloud band with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls over the Channel Country. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist through the tropics north of about Bowen and through northwestern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected over the remaining east coast north of about Gladstone. Fine and very warm elsewhere. Mostly moderate NE to NW winds. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough in the southwest will move a little further northeast. Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls should continue over the Channel Country with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northwest. A high over the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge over the southeast of the state maintaining mostly fine conditions, although isolated showers may develop about the southern border ranges. A trough in the Coral Sea will move westwards towards the east central coast, enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity along the coast and adjacent inland north of about Gladstone, with more isolated showers north of Fraser Island. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur elsewhere through the tropics. Fine conditions are expected over the remainder. Forecast for Sunday The trough over the far southwest will remain slow moving but should weaken with rainfall amounts in the Channel Country easing significantly. The trough in the Coral Sea should move onshore near the central coast during the day. Showers and thunderstorms are likely over most of the interior and tropics, and near the east coast north of about Rockhampton. Scattered showers are expected about the Wide Bay with isolated showers further south into southeast Queensland. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The surface trough extending through far southern Queensland will most likely move further eastwards, gradually extending a southeasterly wind change through southern Queensland waters, most likely on Tuesday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over southern Queensland with more widespread activity near the surface trough. A deep, moist easterly wind flow with showers and thunderstorms should persist into much of northeastern and central Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
