Queensland coast. A surface trough extends from central Australia to the far
southern New South Wales coast, and is expected to move slowly northeastwards,
reaching far southwestern Queensland over the next couple of days. Another
surface trough lies over far the northwestern Coral Sea and will move south
onto Cape York Peninsula today.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the east tropical coast and
adjacent inland north of about Ayr, with some moderate to locally heavy falls.
Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over northern
Queensland and the far west. Light to moderate E to NE winds over the northern
half of the state, fresh at times along the east coast. Moderate NW to NE winds
elsewhere, fresh at times in the southwest.
Forecast for Thursday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and far western
districts, with some rain areas and moderate to heavy falls developing over the
Channel Country. Isolated showers near the east coast south from Bowen to about
Gladstone. Fine and very warm conditions are expected elsewhere. Mostly moderate
NE to NW winds, fresh at times over the far southwest.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough to the southwest of the state will remain slow-moving, and
will maintain a cloud band with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms
with moderate to heavy falls over the Channel Country. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms will persist through the tropics north of about Bowen and through
northwestern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected over the remaining east
coast north of about Gladstone. Fine and very warm elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough will most likely move a little further northeast, with the
coastal section approaching southern Queensland waters. A few showers may
develop about the southern border ranges as the trough approaches. Conditions
should be fine elsewhere over the southeast. Scattered shower and thunderstorm
activity will continue through far western parts of the state, more widespread
with rain areas and moderate to heavy falls persisting over the Channel Country.
A trough in the Coral Sea will move westwards towards the east tropical coast,
enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity along the coast and adjacent inland
north of about Gladstone, with more isolated showers north of Fraser Island.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur elsewhere through the tropics.
Fine conditions are expected over the remainder.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough over the far southwest will remain in place, while the Coral Sea
trough will likely move onshore near the central coast. Showers and
thunderstorms are likely over most of the interior and tropics, and near the
east coast north of about Rockhampton, with scattered showers further south into
southeast Queensland.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The surface trough extending through far southern Queensland will most likely
move further eastwards, gradually extending a SE wind change through southern
Queensland waters. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over southern
Queensland, most widespread near the surface trough. A deep, moist E'ly wind
flow and showers and thunderstorms should persist into much of northeastern and
central Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
