MELBOURNE - Feb 29/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system south of the Bight extends a ridge south of Tasmania. A trough over New South Wales will deepen overnight and on Thursday with a low forming in trough over the Tasman sea later Thursday. The high will drift towards southern Tasmania Friday night, cradling the inland trough. As the high reaches the Tasman Sea on Saturday, the trough is likely to deepen over South Australia with with a low pressure centre expected to form near southwest Victoria Saturday night. The trough will move across Victoria on Sunday as the low pressure system moves south of Tasmania. Forecast for the rest of WednesdayCloudy. Rain areas tending to isolated showers or drizzle about the central and west coasts. Moderate southeasterly winds, fresh near the coast.Thursday 1 MarchRain areas, with heavy falls about the northeast and east Gippsland, contracting eastwards during the afternoon and easing later. Isolated showers and drizzle to follow in the south, tending scattered about the Gippsland and Otway coasts. Mild with fresh southeasterly winds, strong at times near the coast.Fire Danger - Locally very high in the northwest. Low to moderate elsewhere.Friday 2 MarchScattered showers in the east, contracting to the Gippsland coast. Isolated showers over remaining districts. Mild and mostly cloudy with generally fresh easterly winds.Saturday 3 MarchPatchy rain, more widespread in the west and about the northeast with isolated thunderstorms possible in the west. Mild with moderate to fresh northeasterly winds shifting westerly over western districts during the afternoon.Sunday 4 MarchScattered showers, more isolated in the northwest, gradually contracting to on and south of the ranges by the evening and becoming isolated.
